2006 team
news
We are proud to announce that 2 high calibre riders
have joined Cherry Valley RT for the 2006 season. Joining
us to boost our road squad is 26 year old Andy
Hayton from North Lincolnshire and Jon
Surtees provides the backbone of more power
behind the time trialling team. |
Andy
Hayton

|
Andy
Hayton began cycling at school, riding Mountain
bikes for fun and then began racing at 15. Andy
rode for Nottingham University whilst a student,
during which he had a trial for the Cannondale
Mountain Bike Team.
Andy took to the road in 2000 purely for training,
but found it more
enjoyable, so he joined local club Axholme Wheelers
and had immediate success and quickly gained his
2nd Cat licence.
In 2001, Andy signed for for Wil-Lec Panoramic
Racing Team and enjoyed a successful few years
riding as part of a 'proper' team, culminating
in victories in France and he also gained his
1st category licence in the process.
The Wil-Lec Team folded at the end of 2004, when
he then signed for Cottingham Coureurs for the
2005 season. A season dogged by injury and misfortune,
but Andy still rode the National Road Race Championships
and Premiers Calendar events The Lincoln
GP, Rutland-Melton and East Riding Classic.
Andy is looking forward to getting back to winning
ways with Cherry Valley RT in 2006 and training
is progressing well to date.
After many consistent finishes in Premier Calendar
Races, Andy has a depth and wealth of experience
in road racing which he brings to Cherry Valley
Racing Team. |
Over the last
few years Andy’s results have included winsboth
domestically and Internationally including a win
in the Grand Prix de Vayres in Bordeaux, France,
Lincolnshire Divisional Road Race Champion and
first in the Wheelshop Road Race. After numerous
top 5 placings in Elite and 1st Category races
and several placings in France, Andy’s most
recent successes include a 15th place in an Elite
race at 'Rumbeke' in Belgium in 2005.
Andy will join Richard and Gareth in the road
team for the 2006 season. |
Jon Surtees brings
his time trialling expertise to Cherry Valley
for 2006. Jon Started cycling in 1982 with Clifton
CC in York and moved on as a junior to Knaresborough
in 1984 progressing to Yorkshire Junior 25 champion
with Personal Bests of 20:15 and 54:15 at 18 years
old.
Jon Represented Yorkshire and Humberside Centre
of Excellence several times on the road, riding
the Tour of the Kingdom stage race in Scotland
and Tour of North Yorkshire finishing the latter
in 6th overall against a Dutch national team and
the likes of Pete Longbottom and Bernie Burns.
At this time Jon also progressed to 2nd Cat.
In 1991 Jon joined the RAF and turned his back
on cycle racing, choosing rowing instead. As a
member of the RAF team he was selected to row
at the World Masters regatta in Munich in 1998
and Seville in 1999 against some former Olympic
athletes. By 2000 Jon decided to return to cycling
and rode a 10 mile TT on the back of just rowing
training and recorded a time of 22:58. This gave
him the inspiration to train properly again and
by the end of 2001 his times were down to 21:08
and 52:58.
After 4 months in the Falklands at the end of
2001 and beginning of 2002, Jon hit the TT circuit
hard and recorded 4 short 51’s a long 19
and several very short 20’s and also won
the Inter Services 25 title. 2003 was another
good year, recording another 51 and a total of
46 top 6 placings with 14 wins and the Inter Services
individual 10/25 title and team once again. 2004
saw Jon riding for LuK racing.net and pushing
two more 51’s and 25 20 minute 10’s.
The highlight being beating Zak Carr and Sam Barker
in a 2 up and pushing out 53:43 at the gail swept
Boston Wheelers 2 up.
2005 was a year for the short distances where
Jon went below 20 minutes once again and had 4
more rides under 20:10.
|
Jon Surtees

|
As for 25’s, Jon never had
the best of conditions for a super fast time but
still averaged 53 minutes each time I rode.
Jons future is now with Cherry Valley where he
joins forces with Ian, Andy Moore, Andy Lintin,
Sam and Aaron. In Lincolnshire, the team should
dominate in just about every event they choose
to ride. |

2005
season review
As 2005 draws to a close
it has been yet another successful year for Cherry
Valley Racing Team. The season couldn’t
have started better with a win for Ian Dalton
in the opening race of the year in the Scunthorpe
10 after a second place a week earlier in a snow
covered Peak District hilly time trial. Andy Moore
found early season form after returning from a
trip to Majorca to win the Bourne Wheelers Hilly
time trial, which saw 5 Cherry Valley riders dominate
the top 10 placings.
Meanwhile Sam, who had just started his first
year at University, quietly started his first
season for Cherry Valley RT and steadily built
up his racing speed and strength as the spring
progressed. His younger brother Aaron, however,
was already showing signs of his potential when
he recorded a personal best time of 21.41 for
10 miles and it was only April 2nd! After a heavy
winters training program, Andy Lintin was having
one of his best starts to a season for years as
he continually posted top 5 placings and it would
only be a matter of time before he recorded his
first in of the season.
The road racing season started for Richard in
late March. He was continually frustrated by lack
of winter mileage due to a winter long injury
which meant he struggled to keep pace with his
rivals. This would soon change, as his quality
would shine through as the season progressed.
Gareth was to join Richard on the road racing
front in late April which gaining results quickly.
As the spring progressed Ian and Aarons form
peaked and troughed unnaturally. Both riders underwent
blood tests as something wasn’t quite right
with them. Ians results were not conclusive and
his form would gradually return but not in time
to mount a challenge in the Rudy Project TT series.
Everyone was shocked when Aaron received his results
which showed he was suffering from Glandular Fever
and would miss the rest of the season and possibly
not ride his bike again in 2005.
May saw us promote our open time trial as we
dodged the rain and Nigel White beat a heavy contingent
of Cherry Valley riders to win the first Simon
Goodge Memorial Trophy in memory of the former
Cherry Valley Rider. The event couldn’t
have been held without the kind support from all
the friends and family of Cherry Valley Racing
team. A big thanks to John Richards for looking
after Jenny Goodge and Martin and then presenting
the prizes.
As the spring drew to a close there were victories
across a range of riders including Ian, Andy Moore
and Andy Lintin as open and LRRA events were once
again dominated by Cherry Valley RT. Andy Lintin
recorded a superb time trialling win in the Scunthorpe
RC circuit time trial as he led Ian, Gareth and
Aaron to the top 7 placings. Andy Moore was taking
victories in the LRRA middle markers 25, Scunthorpe
25 and Lincoln 10. Towards the end of May Richard
and Gareth concentrated soley on road racing which
saw Gareths form improve narrowly missing out
on a win in the last stage of the DMCS 2-day as
Richard became stronger and stronger week by week.
Summer racing was well under way and despite
a winter injury which wrecked most of Richards
winter training and subsequent road racing season,
he recovered to help win the fastest team award
in the LRRA 10 and 25 whilst also taking the fastest
handicap awards in both events. Andy and Ian dominated
the LRRA 25 with the top two placings and while
Andy Moore and Ian were notching up more and more
time trialling victories, Gareth rode a race long
break away to take a lone victory in the GT Ellingworth
Raod Race where Richard also placed 11th. As the
weather varied in June, Sam’s time trialling
times didn’t and they were steadily falling
as he placed 4th in the Brocklesby 10 and 7th
at Skegness. Sam’s was now showing his true
potential and much better things would come from
Sam in just a few months. Gareth was enjoying
his road racing once again and was denied another
victory when he punctured just a few miles from
the finish whilst in the lead in a rain swept
Acorn Road Race. June saw Ian also finish a magnificent
14th in the National 50 TT championships held
in North Yorkshire.
With the summer well and truly in full swing,
July saw more wins for Ian as Sams times continued
to fall and his results improve. Ian recorded
another stunning victory with a 19 minute 10 when
he beat Sam Barker in the Birdwell Wheelers 10,
which also saw 3 of the Cherry Valley team in
the top 10 placings of a full field of 120 competitors.
Andy Lintin was now working long hours which effected
his racing and he would see his season effectively
finished by the end of the month. July would see
4 wins for the team and Sams 10 mile time trial
times were getting more and more impressive as
he took a third place in the Yelo Velo 10. By
mid July Sam had set a new personal best and his
first 20 minute 10 and only 12 hours later he
would help the team to the LRRA 50 team award
when he was only 5 seconds away from breaking
the 2 hour mark. The same LRRA 50 saw Ian take
the win in a new championship record time followed
by Andy Moore in second place with Cherry Valley
filling 3 of the top 4 places. Richard now concentrated
on his road racing thoughout July which saw his
best results come in the Hull Thursday Stage Race
where he finished 13th overall. As Richards form
continued to improve he was denied some more good
results by negative racing in several events.
The summer months continued with Andy Moore being
denied a win because of an overturned caravan
on the A1 in the Newark Castle 10 which also saw
Sam keep his good form to finish 11th. More road
racing would see Gareth back in the winning break
at the Bridlington Road Race where cramp scuppered
his chances of a another victory. Meanwhile, Ian
was on full form when he flew around the Alford
25 to take another impressive victory ahead of
Dominic Sweeney. A rare return to road racing
saw Ian finish 8th in the Stuart Reader Memorial
Road Race near Caistor as racing started to become
a bit thin on the ground. There was, however,
better news for Aaron, as he started some gentle
cycling following some positive results from his
doctor.
Ians good form continued as he successfully defended
his National Masters Time Trial Title in Yorkshire
over a tough hilly course. After a strong start
to the Otley 2 day Road Race, Richard legs deserted
him at the wrong time which cost him a high overall
placing. Gareth continued to suffer more bad luck
in road races as he had problems in the Clifton
2 day road race when he punctured on day 1 and
snapped his chain whilst in the winning break
on day 2. As the poor weather returned towards
the end of the season, some events were cancelled
but victories were never that far away as Ian
rode another LRRA event win in the 30 which saw
Sam and Andy Moore puncture as Andy Lintin made
a welcome and solid return to racing. Looking
to finish his road racing season on a high, Gareth
made the move into the winning break in the Thurcroft
Raod Race which saw him finish 4th with Richard
close behind in 15th place.
As the season drew to a close, the postponed
LRRA 10 was now held in October with victory going
to Ian on a windy day with Gareth in second place
and Richard close behind in 4th. The last race
of the season saw Ian finish 2nd in the Eagle
Road Race as Richard prepared the way for him
with some strong work at the front chasing down
breakaways all morning.
The 2005 season is now well and truly over (apart
from the Chesterfield Christmas 10 which Sam may
ride) but the team is already building for 2006
with a stronger team.
The 2006 season will see the team strengthened
by the addition of a top quality time triallist
who has recorded sub 20 minute 10’s and
will be a great addition to the team. 2006 will
also see Gareth and Richard concentrate on road
racing where they will be joined be by a new team
member and 1st Cat road rider.
Many thanks to all the riders, helpers, parents
and friends of Cherry Valley Racing Team for making
2005 such an exciting season. Without everyone’s
support we couldn’t function as a team.
We believe the 2006 season will be one of our
most successful for many years as we have strengthened
the team to compete at the highest level in both
time trials and road races.

Ian meets Sean Kelly |
 |
Ian received his awards for his
National Time Trial circuit championship and 2nd
place in the Rudy Project National Time Trial
Series at the Champions night recently held in
Derby.
Guest of honour was legendary ex professional
cyclist Sean Kelly who presented Ian with his
awards.
Where's Ian's left hand? Sean Kelly claimed
to have had is wallet nicked not long after this
photo was taken!! Not just quick on a bike eh
Ian, he's also a light fingered larry too.
Ian, sporting a pony tail and shell suit trousers
was heard to say to Sean 'you don't want to put
that wallet there Sean, I'm a bit dodgy, you know,
a little bit werrr, I nick things - no I'm serious.......'

First group training session
of the year |
Four Cherry Valley RT riders met on saturday 29th January
for their first training session together of the year. Aaron,
Richard Ian and Gareth met for a short ride together through
the Lincolnshire Wolds around Alford, Spilsby and Belchford
before splitting to their separate ways. The meet was a general
success despite the different levels of fitness from all riders
and a strong wind and generally miserable conditions facing
the four Cherry Valley riders on this cold Saturday morning.
The next group training ride is planned for Saturday 12th
February 2005.

We took delivery of the Lance Armstrong Livestrong

sold 50 bands. We now just have a few left with
global sales now reaching 20 million wrist bands

Thanks to Cherry Valley rider Aaron for his sterling

Cherry Valley 2005 pre-season
training |
 |
With the new 2005 racing season
only weeks away, most of the Cherry Valley RT
have been busy training hard for the forthcoming
events. Ian, Andy Lintin, Andy Moore and Gareth
Williams have all been training hard for March
start to their season.
Sam has been busy at University and will be starting
his training regime shortly but has most of the
summer off and will reach his peak then. Sam has
already targeted some early season road races
and is lucky enough to be able to use some local
circuit races at quality training.
Aaron has also just started his training program
in conjunction with his A-level PE studies and
although being busy at school, Aaron is now training
hard for an early season start. Like his brother
Sam, Aaron will have most of the summer free for
training and we will probably see the best of
him then.
Richard has also just started his training despite
many false starts throughout the winter period.
Richard has undergone intense physiotherapy sessions
on an injured back which has stopped him from
training in full from the end of the 2004 season
until January 2005. |
|
|
Cherry
Valley RT held their annual club dinner at the Black
Horse restaurant in Bardney near Lincoln. A fine menu
was on offer to all and the evening was a great success
despite having to be asked to leave at the early time
of 11.30pm.
Below are some pics taken from the evening, to enlarge

Additions
to the 2005 Cherry Valley Racing Team line up |
|
 |
Richard Robinson joins
us from Alford Wheelers for the 2005 season with road
racing his main discipline. Richard will be a great
asset to the team with both his road racing and time
trialling abilities being concentrated into a structured
season based around a series of season long objectives
both on the road and time trialling.
The rest of the Cherry Valley team welcome Richard
and look forward to some him adding to the teams dominance
in local events.
Good luck Richard for 2005.
|
|
 |
Sam Tuplin joins us from Alford Wheelers
after only one season with the Lincolnshire based club.
Although Sam has just started a lengthy degree course
Coventry University, Sam has outlined his main objectives
for the coming 2005 season as a mix of both road racing
and time trialling squeezed in between his studies.
Sam joined Alford Wheelers in 2004 after spending several
successful years racing for Skegness Wheelers. Sam is
only 18 years old and is looking to break into the National
Espoirs road racing scene over the coming years whilst
maintaining his time trialling background. Sam is a
welcome boost to the Cherry Valley team for 2005 and
will be a tough rider to beat.
Good luck Sam for 2005
|
|
 |
Like elder brother Sam, Aaron Tuplin
joins us after only one season with the Lincolnshire
based club. Finishing 10th in this years National GHS
Final and 3rd in the LRRA 30, 17 year old Aaron will
be a solid addition to the team for the 2005 season
and his time trialling abilities will only get stronger
as he develops into an outstanding rider.
Aaron joined Alford Wheelers in 2004 after starting
his racing career with Skegness Wheelers. Aaron is only
17 years old and sights his main objectives for next
season as time trialling with a keen eye on the National
Junior Championships.
Good luck Aaron for 2005.

Ian Dalton finishes 2nd overall in
National Time Trial Series
Ian Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) has finished second overall
in the Rudy Project National Time Trial series in 2004. After
6 national counting rounds and 4 qualifying district rounds,
Ian finished second overall behind National 50 mile Time Trial
Champion Michael Hutchinson (Team MDT- Giant). With the final
district round at Bognor Regis in October only changing third
place in the overall standings, its a big CONGRATULATIONS
to Ian for a great season of consistent rides in the series.
Cherry Valley Open 10 mile Time Trial
