March 2003 - Bring it on!

Scunthorpe RC 10 (15/03/2003) – C10/27 - Let it begin

A cold and windy day heralded the beginning of the 2003 season for Andy Lintin and Gareth Williams in the Scunthorpe Road Club 10 mile time trial on Saturday 15th March 2003. On a flat course not renowned for its speed, the riders battled a strong South Easterly wind on a cold afternoon on the A15 based course south of Scunthorpe. Pleased with his 10th place, Gareth Williams recorded a time of 23:44, just one place ahead of his team mate Andy Lintin who was disappointed with his 24:36. With Andy Moore leaving the start of his season until April and Ian Dalton having work commitments, a guaranteed team prize was lost. Event winner was Gary Shooter from Wetherby Wheelers, showing fine early season form with a 22:13, closely followed by Eddie Woollock (Pete Read Racing) at 22:31 with veteran Derek Roe in 3rd at 22:45.

Bourne Wheelers CC Hardriders (16/03/2003) – CS/13 – First Victory of the 2003 season

A cold and foggy morning welcomed this new event to the racing calendar near Stamford in Lincolnshire which saw Ian Dalton start his new season with a fine victory. After a delayed start, the fog finally gave way to glorious sunshine for the two 12 mile hilly circuits based at Essendine. The halfway mark at 1 lap saw Ian taking a 28 second lead over Jon Rickards (Rutland CC) with Tim Melville (Cambridge University CC) a further 20 seconds back in third spot. Gareth Williams was placed 4th at the end of the first lap just ahead of Andy Briggs (Doncaster Whls) and Andy Linitin lying 10th. As the riders began the second lap the wind that had cleared the fog started to increase reflecting in an average 30 second slower second lap for most of the leading riders.

At the finish, Ian had maintained his lead to win by 36 seconds over Rickards with Melville finishing 3rd over a minute behind Rickards. Gareth finished in 5th spot loosing time to Andy Briggs on the second lap whilst Andy gained a few vital seconds to move him up one place to 9th to ensure Cherry Valley won the team prize.

North Hampshire RC 10 – (29/03/2003) – H10/8 – Cherry Valley rider doesn’t travel well

Riding the North Hampshire RC 10 on the undulating H10/8 course in Surrey, Gareth Williams finished in a disappointing 30th position from a field of 120 riders in a time of 22:33. On the warmest day of the year so far in still and fine conditions, event winner and comeback rider Chris Ball (Team 53-12 Multisports) recorded a time of 20:21 beating Ray Hughes (Clarence Whls) into second place by 3 seconds and Carl Saint (Yorkshire RC) and Stephen Walkling (VC St Rahphael) finishing equal third in a time of 20:29. On a course that didn’t suit the Cherry Valley rider, Gareth struggled to get into his stride with a 1 mile uphill section within yards of the start line and continuing to undulate to the turn, Gareth finally got going on the return leg to the finish.

April 2003 - Plenty of early spring high winds

Yorkshire Ladies CA 10 – (05/04/2003) – O10/2 – First Blood to Rambo

In the first head to head battle this season between Julian Ramsbotton (Race Scene) and Ian Dalton, Julian beat Ian into second place by 5 seconds in this event held on the popular Ranby A1 based course. In continuing good conditions for the spring, the course was relatively fast with a slight northerly wind helping the riders on the return leg from the turn at Blyth. In one of his first outings of the year, Andy Moore recorded a 10th place time of 21:16 with team mate Gareth Williams 22:16 gaining thirtieth spot in a full field of 120.

Lincoln Wheelers Hilly – (12/04/2003) – C25/23 – Cherry Valley Riders in top 10 placings again

Tony Alcock (North Notts Olympic) scored an impressive win in this annual Lincolon Whls promotion. The proposed course based on the middle street from Scampton to Harpswell and incorporating a loop through Willoughton totaling 25 miles was cut short just minutes before the start due to a fatal road accident on the A631. Subsequently, the course was shortened to 18 miles and with a strong easterly breeze blowing off the coast, most of the climbs were tackled with a strong head wind. With the riders turning short at Harpswell Hill roundabout and finishing at the top of Scampton hill, event winner Alcock recorded a time of 38:38 with Julian Gromett (Cottingham Coureurs RT) second with 39:08 and Ian Dalton a further 29 seconds behind Gromett in a time of 39:37. With Gareth Williams seventh in a time of 42:34, the lack of a third counting rider for Cherry Valley meant the team award went to North Notts Olympic.

Sleaford Wheelers 10 - (19/04/2003) – C10/10 – Andy and Gareth get 2nd and 3rd

Fighting strong easterly winds, Andy Moore recorded a time of 22:28 to finish second to event winner Jon Surtees (RAF CC) who won the event in a time of 21:58. Third spot was taken by Gareth Williams a further minute behind team mate Andy with a time of 23:30. The Sleaford based course started south on the A15 turning at Osbourneby roundabout and finishing just short of the start and the high winds from an easterly direction made bike handling very difficult in some of the more exposed sections. ‘I had to stop using my tri-bars in some sections because the cross winds made bike handling almost impossible’ was the comment from Gareth Williams, whilst most people were surprised that winner Jon Surtees had used a rear disc.

Due to his recent lack of form Andy Lintin was a non starter. Andy underwent blood tests during the week and is awaiting the results to try and pinpoint the reason for his poor form and lack of strength.

Lincoln Wheelers 10 – (26/04/2003) – C10/28 – Dalton back to winning ways

A strong south westerly wind meant hard going for this event based on the middle street between Ingham and Hemswell. Still slightly out of form, but scoring a fine win, Ian Dalton recorded a time 21:51 to ensure first place with Eddie Woollock (Pete Read Racing) 35 seconds further back in second place. With the wind blowing the riders to the turn, it was a hard slog back to the finish on the exposed ridgeline the road follows. Gareth Williams finished with a time of 23:28 placing him fith whilst Andy Lintin was still missing due to illness.

On one of the windiest days so far this season and with heavy intermittent rain showers, Gareth rode to thirteenth place overall in a field of 120 riders with eventual winner Richard Bradley (Stourbridge CC) recording a time of 53:38. ‘I started to tire over the last three miles after riding the Lincoln Whls 10 the day before, but I hung on into a very strong south westerly wind and an extremely difficult drag up to the finish’.

May 2003 - Cherry Valley Riders find good form

Retford & Dsitrict Wheelers 10 – (03/05/2003) – A10/20 – Dalton squeezed again!

In this popular promotion on the A1 at Tuxford in Nottinghamshire, Ian Dalton was again squeezed into third spot by event winner Jeff Snodin (Team Bradgate) and Julian Ramsbottom (Race Scene). Snodin won the event with a time of 20:38, with Ramsbottom second recording a time of 20:44 and Ian third with 20:49. The course was based on an outward leg on the A1 from Tuxford to Carlton on Trent and returning to the finish on the old A1 with its rough and heavy road surface. With a strong westerly breeze, it meant there were both easy and hard sections of the outward and return legs of the course. Gareth Williams rode strongly to finish ninth with a time of 22:17 and was happy with his result.

Thurcroft CC 10 – (10/05/2003) – O10/2 – Every second counts

In a frustrating day for Cherry Valley rider Ian Dalton, Sam Barker (API Bikes.com) beat Ian into second place by eleven seconds on the A1 based course at Ranby in Nottinghamshire. Barker, recording a time of 20:22, beat Ian into second place, 11 seconds behind, with comeback rider Wayne Randle (Wakefield CC) third with a time of 20:54. In a high quality field that included Stuart Shawcross (Dataphonics RT) and Jon Surtees (RAF CC), Andy Moore finished eleventh with a time of 21:43, despite suffering a heavy cold during the week. Cherry Valley’s third rider for the day, Gareth Williams, was disappointed with his time of 22:20 which placed him twenty seventh overall from a full field, but the boys were rewarded for their combined efforts for the day by winning the fastest team award.

Skegness Wheelers 10 – (11/05/2003) – C10/9 - 2nd and 3rd for Cherry Valley pair

On a windy Sunday afternoon, Ian Dalton finished a close second with Gareth Williams third on a course based between Gunby and Ulceby Cross just outside Skegness. The event was won by ever improving Carl Saint (Yorkshire RC) with a time of 21:03 with Ian a close second at 21:11 and Gareth third in a time of 22:19. With the wind blowing more from a northerly direction, which helped the riders from the turn at Ulceby to the finish, a fast downhill finish saw most riders touching speeds in excess of 40mph. The lack of a third team rider for Cherry Valley meant the team prize was lost Alford Wheelers.

Riding his first evening event of the season Ian Dalton was second in the Scunthorpe Road Club 10 promotion on the A15 between Kirton Lindsey and the M180. On a windy evening, the expected rain held off for all the riders but the tough north westerly wind made for a hard ride to the turn. Event winner and comeback rider Wayne Randle (Wakefield CC) recorded a time of 21:14 on this tough evening with Ian 19 seconds behind Randle in a time of 21:33. Pleased with his sixth place, Gareth Williams recorded a time of 22:51 underlining some good recent form.

Barton Wheelers 10 – (17/05/2003) – C10/3 – Williams 13th on tough day

This early season Barton Whls promotion proved to be a tough event on a tough course. With the wind blowing strongly from the south, the ride to the turn was hard. On a course which runs on the A15 from Barton and turns at the A15/A180 Barnetby top junction, is mainly uphill and on Saturday into strong head wind. Wayne Randle (Wakefield CC) won his second event inside the week in a time of 21:21 with Joel Wainman (Pete Read Racing) second in 22:03. Gareth Williams was disappointed not to be placed inside the top 10 and was thirteenth with a time of 23:22, but on a day that continually threatened rain, he was just glad not to get wet.

City Road Club (Hull) 10 – (20/05/2003) – V718 – Personal best for Williams

In one of the last events to be held on the popular V718 course at Brough near Hull on the A63, Gareth Williams recorded a personal best 10 time with 21:45 and finished tenth overall in the event. With a very strong westerly wind blowing the riders to the turn, most riders averaged above 30mph to the turn. The rain held off for the event and even with a strong headwind return leg from the turn to the finish, some quick times were recorded. In form rider Wayne Randle (Wakefield CC) recorded his third win inside the week in a time of 20:32 just ahead of Steven Roe (Pete Read Racing) in 20:48. Although happy with his time, Gareth was disappointed not to go a 10 seconds quicker which would have earned him 5th place from 71 riders. ‘I was 10 seconds up on my minute man Stuart Wells at the turn’ said Gareth, but I lost some time on the way back to the finish and Stuart took 19 seconds out of me in the second half of the race.

With just a few days before his wedding, Gareth Williams was again a little disappointed with his ride to finish in 4th position. Sharrow CC 50 – (20/07/2003) – O50/10– Personal Best and Victory for Ian

A 6:30 early morning start greeted the riders of this Sharrow event held on the A1. The course covered two laps of the O25/10 course from Ranby to Markham Moor and Blyth. A bright and sunny morning turned quite breezy for the start of the second lap for most of the riders with Ian Dalton taking advantage of the good early conditions to record an opening 25 mile time of 54:06 nearly 2 mintues quicker than Nik Bowdler (Farnborough & Camberley CC) in 56:01 and Alan Cooke (VC Chesterfield) in 56:07. Cherry Valley rider Gareth Williams was nearly 5 minutes behind Ian at the 25 mile marker with a time of 58:53. With the wind increasing from the south west, the second 25 mile section was inevitably covered at a slower pace. With the commanding lead Ian held at 25 miles, only a mechanical problem would stop him winning another event this season and with a two minute slower second half to the race Ian won the event with a personal best time of 1:50:12 increasing his 2 minute advantage over Alan Cooke with a 1:52:59 and Nik Bowdler finishing 3rd with a time of 1:53:37. Gareth Williams eventually finished a disappointed 14th in a time of 2:01:35 after ‘blowing’ with 10 miles left. Local Lincolnshire rider Andrew Moore (Barton Whls) finished with a brilliant time of 1:57:15 to finish and eventual 5th.

LRRA 50 – (27/07/2003) – C50/S8 – Another Lincolnshire solo and team title for Cherry Valley

On a cold and wet start on the Boston based 50 circuit, Ian Dalton and Andy Moore proved they were too strong for any of the local challengers in the LRRA 50 mile championship held on Sunday 27th July. Underlining his recent good form, Ian won the event with an impressive time of 1:53:06 with Andy 2nd in a time of 1:57:36 still 2 minutes ahead of 3rd placed rider Phil Crashley (Gainsborough Aegir) 1:59:02. Cherry Valley RT continued to dominate the event with Andy Lintin finishing 4th with a time just outside 2 hours 2:00:54 and with Rob Brewer (Lincoln Whls) sandwiched between Andy and Gareth Williams 6th with a time of 2:03:29. Although Ian was pleased with his time, Andy Moore was not altogether pleased with his ride. Gareth was disappointed to be so far off the pace but looking forward to some tough training in the Alps with Ian the following week. With 4 Cherry Valley riders in the top 6 placings, the fastest team proze was a foregone conclusion with Ian, Andy Moore and Adny Lintin making up the Cherry Valley winning team.

Cherry Valley Racing Team completely dominated the LRRA 2up Team Time Trial held on the new Saxilby, Lincoln, Torksey course. With Ian Dalton and Andy Moore winning in a new LRRA record time of 52:56, a successful day as capped by Andy Lintin and Gareth Williams finishing 2nd in a time of 55:51, a time just outside the old LRRA record. A calm and warm morning greeted the riders and there were no challengers in the LRRA event to both Cherry Valley teams all morning at any of the time checks. The only surprise was the close run times between the Lintin / Williams team and Martin Oliver / Mark Booth (Kiveton Park CC). With time checks splitting the two pairings by a second or two, it was a closely matched open event with both pairings finally finishing equal on time.

Ians convincing winning time of 19:27 over second placed Julian Ramsbottom (Race Scene) 19:38 was a personal best ever for Ian. Notts Clarion CC 10– (27/09/2003) – A10/20 – Wrong time wrong place

In a surprise defeat, Ian Dalton was placed second behind Julian Ramsbottom (Race Scene) in the Nottingham Clarion 10 held on the A10/20 in Tuxford on Saturday 27th September 2003. Ramsbottom recorded a winning time of 19:56 whilst Dalton tied for second place with National 25 Bronze medalist Matt Bottrill (Race Scene) in a time of 20:03. In a dispute with the time keepers, Daltons computer placed him first with a time of 19:45, but the time keepers kept to their original timings.

Strong south westerly winds meant a tougher outward leg to the turn with the wind helping more on the return leg to the finish. With Ian off near the back of the field, the mark was set by Mathew Bottrill who started early and led until Ian was credited with an equal time and almost last rider off Julian Ramsbottom came in to win 7 seconds ahead of the second placed pair.

It was a bad news day all round for the Cherry Valley riders, along with Ians poor luck with the time keepers, Gareth Williams was riding with an upset stomach and was disappointed with his final time of 21:47 and placing him 12th overall whilst expecting to be 30 seconds quicker on the day. Andy Lintin also continued the bad luck with an off day and un-characteristic time of 22:50 placing him 19th overall.

Last win for Dalton in Nottinham Clarion 25

In the last race of the season, Ian Dalton scored a superb win in windy conditions on the A1 on Saturday afternoon (4/10/03). The Tuxford to Newark based course gave the riders a 12 mile super fast tailwind section in which Ian covered the first 6 miles at an average speed of 36mph. Despite strong northerly winds on the return leg from the turn at Newark, Ian finished in a winning time of 52.10, a margin of over a minute on second place rider Geoff Platts (Team Clean) and Nick Giles (Warrington RC) a further 30 seconds behind Platts.

Ian was delighted with his win and time saying 'he thought he would struggle to do a 55 in the windy conditions'. Team mate Andy Lintin was unfortunate to puncture on the start line bringing his season to a premature end (Hard Luck Andy). 1st. Ian Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) 52.10, 2nd Geoff Platts (Team Clean) 53.24, 3rd Nick Giles (Warraington RC) 53.44, 4th, Barry Charlton (Stone Whls)
