Ian goes for Gold and Wins!

Ian Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) scored one of his finest victories on Saturday 4th September 2004 when he won his category in the National Time Trial Championships. Held on a sporting and undulating course in Northamptonshire on a very warm day, Ian started very fast being passed on the start line by Steve Hulme (Team Velocity) who was starting his second lap. Getting into his rhythm Ian soon passed Steve Hulme and pulled out some significant time on a course that never let up being either up or down. Steve Hulme commented later ‘I saw Ian starting and when he came past me I just wanted to keep Ian in sight but he just pulled away from me on the first climb and I never saw him again’.

With the heat effecting all the riders Ian found the strength to continue his fast first lap pace and record a second lap just a few seconds slower than the first. Taking a drink from his bottle at the beginning of his second lap to counter the effect of the heat, Ian ploughed on to record a brilliant winning time 20 seconds ahead of his nearest rival Martin Smith (Team Milton Keynes).

Commenting after his win, Ian said ‘I was given a time check on Stuart Shawcross at the top of the first climb and was around 10 seconds up. I didn’t feel the heat affected me too much but it was hard to tell if I was going well or not as the course never let you settle as you where either climbing or descending all the time’.
