Welcome to the 2004 results page. In 2004, Cherry Valley
Racing Team had 23 solo victories, 11 second places and 5
third places to their credit.

Matlock
CC Hilly (06/03/2004) AH/2– First race of the year and
another fine win for Dalton
With
the new 2004 season only a few days old, Ian Dalton
(Cherry Valley RT) hast started as he left off at
the end of last season. On a crisp and breezy day in the hills
of derbyshire, the Cherry Valley rider scored a magnificant
victory in the Matlock CC hilly 25 mile time trial. Ian bet
his closest rival, Nigel White (Sherwood CC) by a mere 11
seconds. The Cherry Valley rider was pleased with his efforts
after a long and hard winter training mainly on his own. 'It
was a close thing' Ian said, I had a 21 second lead with 2
to 3 miles to go and started to struggle over some smaller
climbs, but I managed to get going again on the downhill run
to the finish.
With
speeds varying from 50mph down to 8mph on the climbs which
included the 1:7 ascent out of Youlgrave, this was a fine
victory for Ian in his first ride of the year.

Scunthorpe
RC 10 (13/03/2004) C10/27– Second victory of the year
for Dalton
In
his second race of the year, Ian Dalton again
proved to powerful for his nearest rivals taking 1st place
in the Scunthorpe RC 10 on Saturday 13th March 2004. The event,
which was run on the A15 from Redbourne to the M180 roundabout
and back again, was run on a reasonably mild day and with
all the riders missing the intermittent showers, the wind
prove to be the major obstacle as it blew strongly from a
south westerly direction making for a hard return leg to the
finish.
Ian recorded
a winning time of 21:40 to beat his closest rival Julian Ramsbottom
(Newark Castle CC) by 2 seconds in a close run event with
Tony Stott (Science in Sport.com) finishing third in a time
of 22:42. With Julian staring number 30, 9 minutes before
Ian, the race was always a close fought affair. Only 1 mile
from the start Ian was already 6 seconds ahead of Julian but
with a final time check with 1 mile to the finish Julian had
clawed back the deficit and was ahead of Ian by 5 seconds.
A strong finish from Ian on the final downhill section was
enough for his second victory in 7 days.
Andy
Lintin was the only other Cherry Valley RT rider
on the day and finished a very disappointed rider in a time
of 25:20. So disappointed was Andy, he immediately changed
after the finish and rode the 30 miles home from the event
for training.

Bourne
Wheelers CC Hardriders (14/03/2004) – CS/13 –
First Victory of the 2004 season for Andy Moore
Andy Moore (Cherry
Valley RT) impressed in his first open event of the
2004 season with an overwhelming victory in the Bourne Wheelers
Hilly event on Sunday 14th March 2004. The Bourne event was
held around 2 laps of a circuit in Essendine just outside
Stamford. Andy covered the 23 mile course in an impressive
time of 58:33, which considering the high winds causing difficulties
for the riders made an even more impressive victory. Andys
nearest rival, A Wrght (Ashfield RC) was over a minute and
a half back with a time of 1 hour exactly with Time Melville
(Cambridge University), who finished third last year, was
again third in a time of 1hour and 48 seconds.

Rudy
Project Series Round 1 (27/03/2004) – Dalton 2nd in
National Time Trial Series
Ian
Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) continued his early season
form with a stunning ride in the first round of the national
time trial series in Cambridgeshire on Saturday afternoon.
Starting as the third fastest seeded rider, Ian rode strongly
in the fading light of Saturday afternoon to complete the
25 mile sporting course in a time of 55:07, 1 second ahead
of third placed rider Ben Hallam (Data Phonics RT). Event
winner and National 50 champion Michael Hutchinson (MDT-Giant)
completed the course in a time of 51:02 posting his intentions
early on in the Rudy Project Series.
With a total
of 6 counting events towards the overall National Series League
table, Ian is scheduled to ride the National round 2 in April
at Keswick and then National Round 3 in May at Knaresborough.
These events will be complemented by counting district rounds
including the Lincoln Wheelers Hilly in April, the Kettering
CC event in May and the Doncaster Wheelers race in June.
The Cambridgeshire event was
the first round in the national time trial series sponsored
by Rudy Project and covered two laps of a circuit that Ian
describes as being 'undulating with long drags, unlike Hutchinsons
description in the national press saying it was a flat course'.
Pleased with his ride, Ian described the course as a triangular
circuit with plenty of shelter from a cross wind on two of
the sections and a helpful tailwind on the last section. With
riders covering two laps, Ian started as earlier riders were
passing to start their second laps. 'I was a bit concerned',
Ian commented, 'I started as two riders had just passed me
to start their second lap and it took me longer to catch them
than expected'. 'When I finished and saw the results, I was
quite surprised to be 2nd fastest so far ahead of others such
as Dominic Sweeney (Lutterworth Cycle Centre) and Gethin Butler
(Preston Whls) who won last weekend'.
CTT
Report
The 10th annual
RTTC Time Trial Series got off to a flying start with Cambridge
Town and County CC’s promotion of round one of the 2004
national series at Stetchworth, near Newmarket, on Saturday.
With the biggest
field seen in the series history the Rudy Project backed event
was won in fine style by national 50-mile champion Michael
Hutchinson (Team Giant-MDT), who is making the Series one
of his aims for the season.
Hutchinson
covered the 25-miles in 51-02 to beat Cherry Valley RT’s
Ian Dalton by 4-05 while Ben Hallam (Data Phonics RT) in third
was just one second slower.
Former national
Espoirs circuit champion Neil Coleman (Alcan-Bianchi) claimed
fourth place with 55-21 while pedalling fireman Gavin Pardoe
(Stourbridge CC) slotted into fifth, three seconds faster
than sixth placed Paul Pickup (Liphook Cycles) home in 55-53.
It was the
veterans who kicked off the racing on the E2/25b course, two
laps of a triangular, undulating course that had attracted
177 entries. Well marshalled, with plenty of race warning
signs displayed for the benefit of other road users and the
course `Risk Assessment’ displayed at the signing on
point riders had a very safe ride.
With the scratch
race and target time event to battle for the veterans once
again provided the biggest entry, 79 men and women.
It was the
`younger’ vets who obviously dominated the scratch race,
with 40 year-old Mick St Ledger (Sotonia CC) coming out on
top ahead of Kevin Tye (Posh Bikes.com), 42, Stewart Wigglesworth
(Vegetarian C&AC), 41 and Paul Holdsworth (Hounslow &
District Wheelers), 40.
A first lap
27-39 gave St Ledger an early advantage of 38 seconds over
Wigglesworth while Tye was in third at 54 seconds along with
John Ingham (KVRC).
The second
leg saw St Ledger holding the lead to finish with 56-19 while
Tye (57-27) pulled back enough time to push Wigglesworth (57-38)
down to third.
Target time
saw the evergreen John Woodburn (Maidenhead & District
CC) set himself up for the rest of the series claiming first
with +16-04 ahead of Eric Marsh (Pca Ciclos Uno), +13-46,
Chris Moon (Team Clean) +12-09 and John McMillan (Kenton RC)
+12-06, who would liked to have seen “some climbs on
the course.”
There is no
accounting for taste is there!
Two of the
`older` boys who would have challenged, Geoff Platts (Team
Clean) and Roger Iddles (Stourbridge CC) were non-starters;
Geoff laid low with an abscess and Roger at his daughter’s
bedside awaiting a happy event. The
woman followed the vets and it was last year’s RTTC-Rudy
Project series winner Julia Shaw (GS Strada) who proved the
fastest, no doubt helped by having spent the winter months
in New Zealand’s sunshine.
Shaw’s
1-03-39 gave her a winning margin of 26 seconds over cyclo-cross
rider Brenda Pennell (Eastern Region Velo), with Helen Carter
(Eastbourne Rovers CC) in third spot at 1-06, a slim four
seconds better than fifth placed Louise Schuller (Finsbury
Park CC).
A familiar
face was in fifth, former national 10-mile champion Julia
Freeman (Easterley RC) who got round in 1-05-35.
“I did
plenty of miles during my stay in New Zealand and even rode
a road race where I finished third,” Shaw said. “The
weather was great, it’s a bit of a shock to the system
to come back to the cold.”
Shaw is chasing
after her third consecutive overall win in the TT Series and
may have a crack at some road racing.
“It is
good to see so many women (32) riding, I hope the rest of
the series is as well supported. I met a couple who rode today
who I haven’t seen since I used to compete in triathlons
some years ago. They both enjoyed it and say they will be
back “ Runner-up
overall in the 2003 junior series, James Sampson (Race Scene
RT) managed the only under-the-hour ride to take the junior
event with 59-54 after he had trailed Will Dorsett (API Bikes.com)
by 1-20 after the first lap.
A troubled
second lap put paid to Will’s hopes and he had to settle
for second, with 1-00-33.
Best of the
disabled riders was Miki Barker (Yello Velo) with an adjusted
time of 1-07-28, seven seconds better than Wayne Holton (Websters
Cycle.co.uk), who is owed a vote of thanks for his work on
designing the new and lively CTT web site. With
a course record of “ somewhere around 50-30” to
his credit Hutchinson was odds on favourite and as the result
shows he wasn’t far offof it on a dull and cold day.
“My ride
was as much as I expected, it is a good course, the kind that
should be used now and again for the series. The lack of hills
probably helped attract the big entry and I expect a few went
away thinking that circuit time trials are not a bad thing
and might enter more of the series,” Hutchinson said.“The
only trouble was it was getting dark by the time I was finishing,
there wasn’t enough light to see my stopwatch.”This
weekend Hutchinson is out for more Rudy Project points when
he rides the Haverhill Wheelers event. “Then it’s
a bit of road racing in Ireland with the Tour of the North
at Easter,” Hutchinson said, his weekend made complete
when his former university, Cambridge, won the Boat Race.
“That gave me something else to celebrate,” Hutchinson
said on Monday.
Third in the
senior race and best Espoir, Ben Hallam has been laid low
by illness over the least few weeks and unable to get any
speed work in.“But
I’ve got 4,000 miles of basic miles in so I was still
able to get through the 25 miles,” Hallam said.
“I’m
riding the early qualifying rounds of the series before I
have to concentrate on the track. Tomorrow (Sunday) I’m
riding the Great Yarmouth event as I want to get a good lot
of points before track racing takes up my time.” CTT
committee man Peter Stone congratulated event secretary Bill
Clough and his club for a job well done. “I’m
delighted by the size of the field,” Stone said adding
that it augured well for the rest of the series.
Round two of
the national series takes place on April 18 when VC Cumbria
promote on the Bassenthwaite Lake circuit

Hilly (28/03/2004) – CS/9 - Fine 3rd place for Andy
Moore
Whilst Ian
is away riding the Rudy Project National Time Series, Andy
Moore (Cherry Valley RT) is continuing his good early
season start with a fine third place in the Spalding CC Hilly
Time Trial on Sunday 28th March 2004. Event winner was Joel
Wainman (Pete Read Racing) with James Perkins (Zenith CC)
2nd and Andy Moore (Cherry Valley RT) in 3rd
spot. A cool and breezy morning greeted the riders for the
29.5 mile course between Bourne and Grantham. Showing signs
of good early form Andy Moore completed the course in a time
of 1:07:36, only 2 minutes behind in form Wainman and only
a further minute behind Perkins.

April
2004 - Continued good form
Lincoln
Wheelers Hilly (03/04/2004) – C25/23 -Three top 10 placings
for Cherry Valley Riders
With 3 Cherry
Valley riders in the top 10 results, the 2004 Lincoln Wheelers
Hilly TT drew to a close as another successful early 2004
race for Cherry Valley RT had been hard fought on the open
roads north of Lincoln. This latest round of the Rudy Project
District series, which counts toward the overall National
Series, saw Ian Dalton (Cherry Valley RT)
attempting to consolidate his position in the National Points
table by trying to score maximum district points.
With
Ian Dalton 2nd, Andy Moore 6th and Andy Lintin 10th,
the three riders were generally pleased with their performances
for different reasons. Andy Lintin showed good signs of gaining
some form as the season continues whilst Andy Moore can be
please with his efforts of the day and Ian, still suffering
the effects of the previous weekend was happy with his final
time.
With a very strong south westerly
wind helping the riders on the outward stretch on the exposed
‘middle street’ road north of Lincoln and long
and hard slog back to the finish was guaranteed as the high
winds took their toll. With comeback rider Michael Hope (Doncaster
Whls) the first of the seeded riders to start, it was Julian
Gromett (Cottingham Coureurs) who set the pace on the outward
stretch as he was already 30 seconds up on hope at 4 miles.
Next hopeful through was Andy Moore (Cherry Valley
RT) 20 seconds down on Gromett, then came Andy
Lintin (Cherry Valley RT) 90 seconds down with Tony
Alcock (North Notts Olympic) coming through a further 30 seconds
down. The last of the seeded riders saw Ian Dalton
(Cherry Valley RT) passing the outward check point
at 15 seconds down on Gromett.
As the wind
collected pace and rain clouds beaconed, Hope set the fastest
time for the 25 mile hilly course with a rapid 59.37. Hopes
lead lasted less than 15 minutes as Gromett returned with
a scorching time of 56.58. As Andy Moore
came to the finish it was clear he had suffered in the increasing
headwind on the return leg to the finish and completed the
course in a time of 1:00:20. With Alcock closing in on Andy
Lintin in the closing miles, Alcock finished with
a time of 58.47 and Andy Lintin with a time of 1:4:21. It
was left to Ian Dalton and Nigel White (Sherwood CC) to challenge
Gromett with White finishing in 59.27 and Ian Dalton
finishing fast in 57.45 for an eventual second.
Andy Lintin
was relatively pleased with his improving form whilst Ian
Dalton had complained before the start of heavy legs probably
resulting from the lack of recovery from last weeks rudy project
ride.

Sleaford
Wheelers 10 (10/04/2004) – C10/10 - Dalton back to winning
ways
Ian
Dalton (Cherry Valley RT),
overcame cold and breezy conditions tom win the Sleaford Wheelers
10 on Saturday 10th April 2004. The event was held on the
A15 south of Sleaford and turned at Osbourneby roundabout
before finishing just a few hundred yards short of the start
on the A15. With the win blowing from a North Easterly direction,
it made the shorter return leg harder for the riders in the
comparatively small field of only 35 riders.
Ian recorded
a time of 21.29, a new course record, and 7 seconds ahead
of 2nd place rider and last years winner Jon Surtees (LUKracing.net)
who finished with a time of 21.36. A guaranteed 3rd place
was missed by non-starter Andy Moore (Cherry Valley
RT) and which went to Lee Cairns (Pete Read Racing)
with a time over a minute and a half behind Ian. Surprise
ride of the day was Pete Saint (Yellow Velo) who was placed
4th with a final time of 23.14.
Ian happy to get back to winning ways after
last weekends second place, was almost 14 seconds up on Surtees
with around 3 miles to the finish. Using slightly lower gears
than normal, Ian was surprised a little by his time.

VTTA
25 (10/04/2004) - A25/24R - Andy Lintin finds his legs in
VTTA 25
Andy Lintin (Cherry Valley
RT) found some good form to finish the VTTA East Midlands
25 with a creditable top 20 finish in a full field. Andys
time of 59.04 gave him a top finish with the best still to
come from the Bardney based rider. Event winner was the ever
youthful Roger Idles (Stourbride CC) with an awesome 53 minute
ride based on the A1 around Long Bennington.

LRRA
2up TTT (18/04/2004) – C25/4 - Andy Moore and
Andy Lintin win LRRA 2up Championships
|
Cherry Valley
Racing Team dominated the LRRA 2up Team Time
Trial held on the Saxilby, Lincoln, Torksey course as
used for the first time in last seasons event. With
Ian Dalton riding the National round 2 of the Rudy Project
Time Trial Series, Andy Moore and Andy Lintin
recorded a winning time of 57.35 nearly 3 minutes ahead
of second placed riders Craig Lamb and Chris O’Rourke
(Alford Wheelers) finished in a time of 1.00.10 and
third placed riders Jim Boyle and Nick Stephen Poole
(Sleaford Wheelers) 1.00.34.
A windy and wet morning
greeted the riders who effectively faced 2 laps of a
course starting at Drinsey Nook, turning at the Burton
Waters roundabout before heading north again to turn
at Torksey. The second lap saw the riders taken back
from Torksey and past the start line, back through Saxilby
and to turn for the second time at Burton Waters before
returning back through Saxilby and staying on the A57
to finish a mile after the A156 / A57 junction.
The Cherry Valley Riders
were already up on their nearest rivals at about the
5 mile mark increased that lead by 7 miles and with
a strong south westerly wind blowing, the Cherry Valley
pair of Andy Moore and Andy Lintin
consolidated their lead in the quickest section of the
race heading North through Saxilby to Drinsey Nook.
By the
time the Cherry Valley pair were well into their second
lap at 18 miles, a victory was certain barring any mechanical
failure with an unassailable lead of nearly 3 minutes
over Craig Lamb and Chris O’Rourke and finishing
in an eventual winning time of 57.35.
The real
battle for the placings was taking place between the
Alford Wheelers pairing of Craig Lamb / Chris O’
Rourke, Rob Brewer / Adam Hodson (Lincoln Wheelers),
Carl Hawkins / Nick Panton (Sleaford Wheelers) and Jim
Boyle / Stephen Poole (Sleaford Wheelers). With times
hovering around 30 seconds difference between the 4
pairings of riders, the Alford Wheelers pair eventually
came out on top with the second place ride of 1.00.10
followed by Jim and Stephen (Sleaford Wheelers) in third
with 1.0034. Fourth place was even tighter and eventually
going to the Lincoln Wheelers pairing of Rob Brewer
and Adam Hodson in a time of 1.00.46 only 1 second ahead
of Carl Hawkins and Nick Panton (Sleaford Wheelers)
in 1.00.47.
The LRRA 2 up also incorporated
an open event, which saw LUKracing.net pair of Barry
Charlton and Jon Surtees win the open 25 mile event
with a storming time of 54.19 but still nearly 1 and
half minutes slower than the course record of 52.56
set last year by Ian Dalton and Andy Moore (Cherry
Vallery RT) in the same event.
Both Andy Moore
and Andy Lintin both commented on the poor
weather that deteriorated as the event went on throughout
the morning. The rain became heavier for the later riders
and the Cherry Valley pair almost had an incident with
a Range Rover towing a horse box at the Drinsey Nook
turning of the A57 which pulled out right in front of
them forcing the pair to stop. The quick reactions by
the Cherry Valley men averted an almost certain accident
but whilst not upsetting their rhythm too much, the
two Andy’s quickly got back into their stride.
Neither of the Cherry
Valley pair felt they had a particularly good day with
both riders commenting on tired or sore legs, which
was not helped by the poor weather and the 6C temperature
which was compounded by the rain making tired legs feel
even more heavier.

Rudy
Project Series Round 2 (18/04/2004) - Dalton gets
4th in National Round of Time Trial Series
|
Ian Dalton
(Cherry Valley RT) scored a magnificent 4th
place in the second round of the Rudy Project National
Time Trial series on Sunday afternoon. Adding to his
surprise second place in Round 1, Ian admitted to being
pleased with his performances when competing against
some of the top time trialists in the UK.
Round 2 of the Rudy Project series saw the riders tackling
2 laps of a course around Bassenthwaite Lake near Keswick
in the Lake District. The course was relatively fast
with some rolling sections to test the riders climbing
abilities but with nothing too harsh which kept the
average speeds high. With weather conditions always
playing a part, with generally light cross winds and
by the time the later riders started, the rain had eased
and roads were starting to dry up with the occasional
burst of sunshine to be seen around the course.
Ian covered the 31.2
mile course in a time of 1.08.21 at an average speed
of 27.38 mph whilst dropping to 17 mph on some of the
climbs on the ‘B’ roads around the back
of the circuit. Event winner, by a considerable margin,
was Michael Hutchinson (Team MDT-Giant) with a time
of 1:03:37, ahead of former world points champion Chris
Newton (Team Persil) 1.05.47. Another margin of over
a minute to third placed rider Jason Macintyre (Velo
Ecosse) with a time of 1.06.59 before Ian Dalton just
managed 4th spot with a time of 1.08.21, just holding
off 5th placed rider Julian Ramsbottom (Newark Castle)
1.08.24.
At the end of the first lap, Ian was already 30 seconds
up on Ramsbottom but Julian picked up his pace on the
second lap and reduced the deficit to just 3 seconds
between himself and Dalton. Dalton commented afterwards
‘it was a good cause, but I expected to get caught
by Newton who started 4 minutes behind me today’.
‘I went for a ride around the course yesterday
(Saturday) and the wind had completely changed direction
since then. The course was quite good, a bit bumpy around
the back with a poor road surface in places, but it
was pretty fast on the main roads reaching speeds over
30mph’.

As
the fine weather returned to time trialling for the
first time this season, Ian Dalton (Cherry Valley
RT) secured another victory in the Lincoln
Wheelers Charity 10. Ian covered the course in a time
of 21.45 to win by a clear 47 seconds from second placed
rider Andrew Moore (Barton Wheelers). Ever improving
form got Andy Lintin (Cherry Valley RT)
into 5th spot with his ride of 22.59.

the sun shone and temperatures reached 22C, 40 rdiers
faced a course running along the ‘middle street’
from Ingham top to Harpswell roundabout and back again,
just North of Lincoln. The course, which undulates slightly
and has a rough road surface for most of its length,
is not noted for being a quick course, so no rapid times
were expected. With the quality of the field not too
high, Ian took the opportunity to ride his high-pressure
wheels he uses for warming up. With no real competition
for Ian, he cruised to victory on this warm day and
the real battle was for second to fifth spot
As
early starter Andrew Moore (Barton Wheelers) set the
pace with a 22.32, Rob Brewer (Lincoln Wheelers) then
set the next fastest time with a 22.58. Next to finish
was Richard Robinson (Alford Wheelers) in a time of
22.52, which pushed Rob Brewer into fourth spot and
with Andy Lintin (Cherry Valley RT) coming in next with
a time of 22.59.

LRRA
25 Middle Markers 25 - (25/04/2004) - C25/4 - First
and Second places for Cherry Valley Riders
|
As
the fine weather continued over the weekend, Andy
Moore (Cherry Valley RT) scored a find win
in the LRRA middle markers 25 held on the Saxilby based
course around the A57 in a ‘scorching’ time
of 55.32. Andy Lintin (Cherry Valley RT)
continued to shown great signs of improvement finishing
second with a time of 57.34.
A
calm and warm morning meant the riders, who 7 days earlier
faced the same course in appalling windy and wet conditions,
were in for a fine ride with the promise of some relatively
fast times. With only 4 miles covered Andy Moore was
already leading by 5 seconds over Andrew Moore (Barton
Wheelers), closely followed by teammate Andy Lintin
at 10 seconds and then Rob Brewer (Lincoln Wheelers)
at 15 seconds behind.
Andy
Moore was stretching his lead and consolidated those
times by 8 miles and was leading by 28 seconds from
both Andrew Moore (Barton Wheelers) and Rob Brewer who
were tying for second spot. At this stage Andy Lintin
was only 35 seconds behind team mate Andy Moore and
holding fourth spot behind only 7 seconds down on Andrew
Moore and Rob Brewer.
By
the time the riders were halfway through their second
circuit it was clear that there was no threat to Andy
Moore with a clear lead of 1.47 over Rob Brewer closely
followed by Andy Lintin a further 13 seconds behind.
The battle continued for the other placings which was
tight with Andrew Moore (Barton Wheelers) showing continued
good form from the previous day and was in fourth spot
at 2.26 behind Andy Moore closely followed by Chris
O’Rourke (Alford Wheelers) at 3.15. Into the closing
stages it was a close battle for the second spot as
Andy Lintin and Rob Brewer were only seconds apart in
the closing miles. Andy Lintin eventually won the battle
for second place with a finishing time of 57.34 closely
followed by Rob Brewer in third place with 47.40 and
Andrew Moore finishing fourth with a time of 58.07.

Glossop
Kinder Velo Hilly 26 - (25/04/2004) - J8/4 - Ian flies
in the hills and sets new course record

|
Ian
Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) scored an impressive
win at the Glossop Kinder Velo Hilly time trial event
held on Sunday 25th April 2004. The Glossop based course
included some of the toughest climbs in the peak district
and covered a course over 26 miles long passing many
tourist attractions and using many B roads. The riders,
not having time to take in the wonderful views on offer
and the many attractions, fought their way up 20% climbs
and descents reaching speeds of nearly 50mph.
The
riders faced a course starting Glossop taking in the
villages of Hayfield, Chinley, Chapel en le Frith and
Sparrowpit, passing the top of Winnats Pass and Mam
Tor and then along Rushup Edge returning to Chapel en
le Frith and Hayfield before finishing just over the
crest of the Chunal climb.
Ian
covered the course in a new course record time of 1.10.39
which reflected the fine weather conditions and meant
a full three minutes slashed off Ians winning time of
2003.
Starting
in Glossop, the riders faced an immediate climb taking
around 7 to 8 minutes which got the legs burning and
lungs bellowing. ‘As I got towards the top of
the climb, a car pulled out from a side road and went
in my direction which concerned me as I knew I would
catch them on the descent but not have room to pass
them. On the last corner the car braked harder than
I expected which resulted in locking my rear wheel’
later inspection showed the tyre worn down to the canvas.
The
decent of Chinley Head into Chinley was just as interesting
for Ian. As Ian followed the cars on the top part of
the descent at speeds over 40mph into the village below,
the cars braked for the 30mph speed limit, giving Ian
the opportunity to over take some of them at over 37mph.
Approaching the by-pass, Ian continued to increase speed
and passed the rest of the cars at 41mph.
Descending
off Rushup Edge Ian caught his 2 minute man Darren Otter
(Rutland CC) in an effort to gain more time over Darren
Otter Ian passed speed cameras at 45mph in a 40 limit
and caught and passed a motorcyclists, by the finish
Ian had gained a further 36 second on Darren who’s
time of 1.13.15 was good enough for 2nd place, 3rd place
want to local ride Sam Clark (Buxton CC – Set
Valley Cycles) with a time of 1.14.45
Pleased
with his ride, Ian commented, ‘I didn’t
feel as though I was going as well as previous years
when the weather was worse. The last two years the weather
has either been really windy or wet so the fine weather
today was really pleasant and welcome. I think looking
back at the records from this event I actually set a
new course record today’.

2004 - Warm weather returns
VTTA
National Championship 25 (02/05/2004) - O25/13 - Poor
Luck for Andy Lintin
Despite
recent signs of returning form, Andy Lintin was once
again struck with poor luck in the VTTA National 25
championships held in South Yorkshire. After a quick
start and catching several riders starting in front
of him, Andy punctured about 7 miles into the Doncaster
to Crowle based course. |
Rudy
Project National Time Trial Series Round 3 (01/05/2004) -
V266 - Dalton has an 'off day' but still manages 7th place
in National TT Series
|
Despite
being minutes off his normal pace, Ian Dalton
(Cherry Valley RT) still managed a very creditable
7th place in the Rudy Project National Time Trial Series
around the beautiful countryside of Bedale in North
Yorkshire.
Event
winner and series leader was Michael Hutchinson (MDT-Giant)
with a winning time of 59.01. Hutchinson, who is dominating
the Rudy Project Series Table, was closely followed
by National 25 bronze medallist Mathew Bottrill (Jim
Walker RT) in a time of 1.00.21. Gethin Butler (Preston
Wheelers) took third spot with a time of 1.00.47 and
Carl Saint (Yorkshire RC) took fourth place in a time
of 1.01.03.
The
Senior riders faced three laps of a testing course covering
27.5 miles which included many short undulations on
rough road surfaces which was not too Ians liking. The
course was based around undulating lanes around Bedale,
Snape and Masham and was probably suited to those riders
who had some road racing miles in their legs.
Hutchinson,
like Dalton, also commented that he had a poor day but
it was clear from the results, as Ian commented later,
that he was at least 2 minutes off his normal pace with
no explanation other that an 'off day'.

North
Midlands VTTA 30 - (07/05/2004) - O30 - Narrow Victory
for Dalton

|
Ian
Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) continued his successful season
with his sixth victory of the 2004 season in the VTTA
North Midlands 30 held on Saturday 8th May 2004. Following
closely behind Ian were team mates Andy Moore in 7th
place and Andy Lintin in 12th place. The VTTA 30 was
held on an A1 based course starting just outside Retford,
heading south to the A1 at Markham Moor before heading
North to Five Lane Ends and Blyth and following the
same route southbound finishing near the start just
outside Retford.
Dalton,
who recorded the fastest 30 time of the year so far,
recorded a winning time of 1.3.43 to beat Barry Charlton
(LUKracing.net) by 15 seconds. Both Charlton and Dalton
were neck and neck throughout the race with no significant
gap between them. With Dalton starting 10 minutes ahead
of Charlton, it was Dalton who set the fastest time
to the turn and slowly pulled a gap out of 20 seconds
by the halfway point battling hard into a strong North
Westerly head wind. With Dalton unable to concentrate
on the return leg with the wind helping, Charlton started
to claw back some seconds before Dalton picked up the
pace again in the final few miles to the finish ahead
of Charlton.
With
Andy Lintin (Cherry Valley RT) starting early in the
field setting the second fastest time when he finished
with 1.9.00, Andy was surprised to be caught by the
rider starting a minute behind him. Andy Moore (Cherry
Valley RT) finished 5th but was disappointed with his
ride. Andy Moore, still suffering from the effects of
some heavy and intensive training sessions over the
last few weeks was still at least 2 minutes off his
normal pace but put this down to the heavy mid week
training sessions.
Dalton,
happy to get back to winning ways, commented ‘that
he could not concentrate on the tailwind section and
found it a bit harder than he thought it would be. I
only got the 11 sprocket going on some of the tailwind
downhill sections, I thought it was going to be faster
than it was on the way back from the turn’.

Scunthorpe
RC 10 (12/05/2004) C10/27– Second in 3 days for Dalton
Ian Dalton
(Cherry Valley RT) scrored his second win in 3 days and his
7th of the 2004 season with a winning time of 21.21 in the
Scunthorpe RC 10 on Tuesday 11th May 2004. The event, held
on the A15 from Kirton Lindsey to the A15/M180 roundabout
and back, was Ian’s fastest on tha course in many years
of trying. Despite a moderate northerly wind making the slightly
longer 5.5 mile northerly stretch to the turn hard work, Ian
was still 39 seconds clear of second placed rider Tony Stott
(Science in Sport) with a time of 22.00. Third place on the
night in the Scunthorpe promotion went to Adam Wright (Ashfield
RC) who was a further 24 seconds behind Stott and a full minute
behind Ian with a time of 22.24.
Ian commented
‘he was please with his ride, although it was only 19
seconds quicker than the same event and course in March, but
the wind was a South Westerly on that day which helps more
at the start, especially as you ride a longer stretch to the
turn. I didn’t try to hard at the start as it drags
up a little after half a mile and I didn’t want to loose
too much speed up that drag because the wind was coming from
the North’.

Nottingham
to Skegness (15/05/2004) AS1 –Top 10 for Andy
Linting in VTTA Nottingham to Skegness
|
Andy
Lintin (Cherry Valley RT) scored an impressive 9th place
in the VTTA promoted Nottingham to Skegness event held
on Saturday 15th May 2004. With Andy the only Cherry
Valley rider attempting this endurance race, there was
plenty of support on the road side as the Andy neared
the finish in Skegness nearly 3 hours after starting
in Nottingham.
An early
start from Nottingham at 0730 meant the riders didn’t
have to deal with the raising temperatures to much as
a cold start was quickly followed by a rapidly warming
morning. Starting just outside Nottingham, the riders
faced a short ride to the A46 before heading toward
Newark and onto the A17 toward Sleaford. After only
20 miles Andy was caught by the rider starting a minute
behind him, but Andy didn’t panic as he knew this
is an endurance event and not a short sprint to the
finish. By the time the riders got to Sleaford, the
temparture was warming up to 22C and at this point Andy
started to find his legs once again and make headway
on gaining time back. The riders were taken off the
Sleaford A17 by-pass and onto the coast road toward
Conningsby and towards Spilsby via Keal Hill. Once past
Gunby roundabout and with only 5 miles remaining of
the 74 mile event, Andy finally caught and passed the
rider who started a minute behind him and had passed
Andy nearly 50 miles earlier. Not quite having enough
time to calw back the full minute, Andy eventually finished
in a time of 2.57.30 for a fine 9th place overall.

Spire 25 (15/05/2004) O25/10 – Fast time for Andy Moore
gets 9th in Chesterfield Spire 25
With
other Cherry Valley riders racing elsewhere at the weekend,
it was left to Andy Moore to represent the team in the Chesterfield
Spire 25 held on Saturday afternoon on the popular A1 Ranby
based course. With a light North Westerly wind blowing across
the course, it was still one of the best days on this course
all season. The good weather was reflected in some of the
fastest 25 mile TT times of the season to date and non more
so than Andy Moores impressive ride into 9th spot with a superb
52.46. Andy still affected by an intense training schedule
was pleased with his time and overall position as the previous
weeks heavy training session start to kick into action.

Kettering
CC Hilly (16/05/2004) NC15 –'A few seconds more'
Whilst
Andy Lintin and Andy Moore were riding locally on the Saturday,
Ian Dalton (Cherry Valley) was 6th in the Kettering Hilly
event, which was a district round of the Rudy Project National
Time Trial Series. After a disappointing performance in the
last national round of the Rudy Project Series in North Yorkshire,
Ian was hoping for a stronger ride. On a course that suited
Dalton, it appeared he was riding much stronger than the previous
national round which reflected in his final overall time.
With the riders
covering 2 laps of a hilly circuit, Ian finished 6th with
only a handful of seconds separating fourth, fifth and sixth
placings. Event winner was up and coming rider Ben Hallam
(Dataphonics RT) with a winning time of 39.44 closely followed
by Geoff Platts (Team Clean) in second place. Dalton pleased
with his ride felt he rode stronger this week and is heading
back to the ford he showed in some of the early season events.

National
10 (23/05/2004) A10/20 – Fine rides in National
10 for Andy and Ian
|
This weekend saw the UK’s
top 150 time triallist assemble in Nottinghamshire for
the National 10 mile Time Trial Championships. Favorites
to take the honors were Michael Hutchinson (Team Giant-MDT)
and Stuart Dangerfield (Scienceinsport.com). Cherry
Valley RT were represented by Ian Dalton and Andy Moore
who were ceded 29th and 6th respectively.
The
course was based on the A1 starting in Tuxford, then
joining the A1 southbound for about 5.5 miles and then
turning Northbound at Carlton on Trent to head North
on the old A1 finishing 1.8 miles before the start.
With the win blowing from the North East, the southbound
stretch was the fastest with riders keeping speeds around
the 40mph mark to Carlton on Trent. When the riders
turned to head Northbound, they were greeted by a strong
wind to battle into. The hard slog back to the finish
was also compounded by the rough road surface and small
inclines into the win with very little shelter to aid
the riders.
First
of the Cherry Valley riders to start was Andy Moore,
opting not to ride his newly acquired disk wheel, Andy
still turned in a fine performance with a time of 21.19
and a final overall result of 72nd place. Struggling
with his recent form, a disappointed Ian Dalton completed
the 10 in a time of 20.18 still finishing a creditable
21st overall. The event was won by Stuart Dangerfield
(Sceinceinsport.com) in a scorching time of 18.40 with
Michael Hutchinson a disappointed second only 8 seconds
behind Dangerfield in 18.48.

Gainsborough
Aegir 10 (29/05/2004) C10/27
|
Another
win for Ian Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) saw the teams
tally of victories reach a total of 11 for the 2004
season. Ian won the Gainsborough event with a time of
21.20 with team mate Andy Moore a further 31 seconds
behind in second place with a time of 21.51. With Ian
and Andy taking a fine 1st and 2nd, the next Cherry
Valley rider was Andy Lintin with a time of 22.51 to
take 8th place and come back rider Gareth Williams was
10th with a time of 22.54.
A warm
day with threatening rain and a moderate south westerly
wind meant a fast outward stretch to the turn and a
harder return leg along the course based on the middle
street just north of Lincoln and turning at Harpswell
Hill roundabout. Pleased with his win but not too happy
with the quality of his ride, Ian commented he ‘could
not really get going and was held up slightly at the
turn by traffic’. On the way back from the turn
Ian felt to get going a bit better and then the wind
increased before a small rain shower about 2 miles before
the finish which slowed Ian down a bit. Both Andy Moore
and Andy Lintin were pleased with their rides showing
some good signs of returning form after some time off
the bikes. Gareth Williams was also pleased with his
time today commenting that ‘I could not really
get going today and I felt quite poor really but that’s
all to be expected with my first race of the year’.

2004 - Back to winning ways and a full team
Boston
Wheelers 25 (02/06/2004) C25/35 - Superb ride for Dalton secures
another win

|
Ian
Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) scored his second win in 4
days with a lung busting ride in the Boston Wheelers
25 event held on Wednesday evening 2nd June 2004. With
ever improving team mate Andy Lintin close behind in
4th place, it was a successful outing for the Cherry
Valley RT pair.
Ian recorded
a winning time of 54.00 with Andy only 4 and half minutes
back in 58.36. The course, which is not the fastest
around, is based on a route starting outside Donnigton
on the A52 heading toward Grantham, before then heading
north on the A15 toward Sleaford where the riders turned
and followed their outbound route to return and finish
just a mile short of the start. With a moderately strong
wind blowing from the north, the riders faced a cross
wind from the start to Osbourneby before heading into
the wind for the stretch up to Sleaford. The Cherry
Valley pair made easy work of the breezy conditions
and establishing good split times at the 10 mile mark
with Ian already ahead of his nearest rival, Adam Wright
(Ashfield RC), by nearly 2 minutes with Andy Lintin
closely behind 3rd placed rider on the road Aaron Tuplin
(Alford Wheelers).
As the
night continued the wind slowly dropped which meant
a faster leg from Osbourneby to the finish than expected.
Making the most of these conditions, Ian crossed the
line in a time of 54.00 pushing early leader Adam Wright
into second spot with his time of 57.08. Then followed
a closely fought scrap for 3rd place with Aaron Tuplin
finishing in 58.21 pushing Andy Lintin into 4th spot
with a time of 58.36. Only other rider to get under
the hour on the night was Pete Saint (Yello Velo) who
recorded a time of 59.26.
Andy
Lintin was pleased with his ride on the night and is
still looking for more power as we move into June. Ian
was also pleased with his time and is showing signs
of returning form just in time for the weekends National
25 Championships to be held in cockney land (where the
birds are fat and the beer is queer)!

CC 10 (05/06/2004) O10/1 - 7th place for Gareth
|
In
his second race of the season, Gareth Williams recorded
a 22.51 in the Rutland CC 10 to gain 7th place overall
in the event. On a subsiding road, the Cherry Valley
rider was pleased with his return to racing over the
last week and felt a little more settled whilst riding.
The course,
based on the A614 from Hatfield Woodhouse to Blaxton
near Doncaster had a cross wind blowing across the course
which helped the riders more on the 4 mile return leg
from the turn. Favourite to win and scratchman was Kevin
Dawson (Planet X), who won by over a minute with a time
of 20.49 and was in a class of his own.
‘I
was pleased with the way I rode’, commented Gareth,
‘but I thought I might go a bit quicker than the

Scunthorpe
25 (06/06/2004) C25/33 - Great victory for Andy Moore
|
A fine
win for Andy Moore (Cherry Valley RT) closely followed
by a 6th place for team mate Andy Lintin (Cherry Valley
RT) sealed a good days racing for the Cherry Valley
pair in the Scunthorpe 25 on Sunday 6th June 2004. The
Scunthorpe event was held on the slower of all the C1
based courses from Gainsborough to Lincoln.
A fine
and still morning greeted the early starters in the
event which quickly turned humid. A promising still
and quick morning eventually turned into a ‘real
slog’ in both directions for the later riders
which was reflected in many of the times on the day.
Off number 30, Andy Lintin was setting a good pace out
to the turn and followed that up by a good first lef
back from the turn to Drinsey Nook before starting to
suffer. Exiting the woods at Drinsey Nook, Andy Lintin
started to suffer and the speeds were dropping off considerably
but Andy still hung onto the finish to record a fine
time of 59.44 for the day. Meanwhile, Andy Moore, starting
behind Andy Lintin at number 35, was expecting a fast
leg to the turn and a hard slog back to the finish into
the win, but as most of the riders found, it felt just
as hard in both directions. ‘it was just really
hard and the rough road surface over the first and last
7 miles of the course did not help the times either’
said Andy Moore after the race. Andy
Lintin commented after the race, ‘I had all weekend
off work and was expecting to go a bit better today,
but I was really tired and slept most of yesterday and
perhaps I was more tired than expected and that may
have affected my performance today’.

National
25 (06/06/2004) G25/53 - Superb ride by Ian in National 25
|
Ian Dalton (Cherry
Valley RT) was the highest placed Lincolnshire rider
in this weekends national 25 mile Championships held
near Horsham in East Sussex on Sunday morning 6th June
2004. A superb 53.35 secured a 25th place overall despite
being held up by traffic at many of the 20 roundabouts
on the course which would have pushed Ian further up
the result sheet. Still finishing in the top 30 in the
National Championships and 1 second ahead of ‘Me
Old’ Steve China was still an impressive result
for Ian who has shown very intermittent form recently.
‘I
didn’t touch the local hooch last night and stuck
to the imported Batemans’ Ian commented, ‘but
I felt to go quite well today despite the early morning
start and those confusing roundabouts’. ‘It’s
a bit much for a simple Lincolnshire lad like me’
Ian said, ‘they all talk funny and do strange
things down here, not least with each other –
it’s a bit like living in a soap opera’.
Defending
National 25 champ Stuart Dangerfield again retained
his title with a stunning ride of 48.44 and eternal
silver medallist and current National 50 champion Michael
Hutchinson was again second with the only other sub
50 minute ride in a time of 49.09.
Ian should
be back to the top of the leader board this weekend
when he takes on another foreign trip across the Trent
at Gainsborough in the ‘comfort’ wheelers
district time trial series this coming Sunday 13th June.

Brocklesby
CC 10 (09/06/2004) C10/6 - Another top 10 placing for Cherry
Valley rider
Gareth
Williams (Cherry Valley RT) was the only teams rider in the
Brocklesby CC 10 held on Wednesday evening 9th June 2004.
Riding on the harder of the two courses based on the A18 between
Limber and Laceby, the start was at the bottom of the hill
and finished at the top of the hill into a tough westerly
headwind.
Event winner,
Julian Ramsbottom (Newark Castle) flew around the course in
a time of 21.09 closely followed by Stuart Wells (JC Cook
RT) in a time of 21.38. There then followed a small scrap
for the third place between Eddie Woolock (Wil-lec Panarmoria)
and Aaron Tuplin (Alford Wheelers) with the up and coming
Tuplin piping the more experienced Woolock with a great time
of 22.37 and Woolock close behind with a 22.39. With third
place taken, only a few seconds separated Sam Tuplin (Alford
Wheelers), veteran Mike Shacklock (Otley CC) and Gareth Williams.
With Sam Tuplin, older brother of Aaron, recording a 23.02,
followed by Shacklock with a 23.06, Gareth Williams took 7th
spot with a 23.07.
'I was a bit
disappointed' claimed Gareth, 'I did a 9 hour ride on Sunday
and felt to be still suffering the effects today and probably
lost half a minute today. This is my second week of racing
and with that in mind I should not be too despondent'.

Meersbrook
25 (12/06/2004) O25/10 - Cherry Valley riders battle in hard
conditions
|
A blustery
shower affected race saw Andy Moore (Cherry Valley RT)
secure a fine 9th place in the Meersbrook 25 held on
the Ranby based O25/10 on Saturday evening, 12th June
2004. Andy Moore recorded a time of 53.48 in very difficult
conditions on the A1 course with a very strong wind
blowing from a northerly direction. Cherry Valley team
mates Gareth Williams and Andy Lintin both recorded
respectable times to finish 24th and 30th respectively.
Andy Lintin, early off at number 6, got the finish in
a time of 56.16 and Gareth Williams recorded a time
of 55.59 to complete a fine night for the Cherry Valley
riders.
Race
winner and in form rider who finished 8th in the National
25 championships the previous week, Carl Saint (Yorkshire
RC) won the Meersbrook event in a time of 51.42. Andy
Moore, like Gareth Williams thought it would be quicker
on the return leg with the wind behind them from Blyth
to the finish, but both riders found it quite difficult
and the wind not as helpful to the finish.

Doncaster
Wheelers Hilly (13/06/2004) O16C - Demolition Dalton
|
Ian
Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) completely dominated the Doncaster
Wheelers Hilly time trial on Sunday 13th June 2004.
Dalton also scored maximum points in the Rudy Project
time trial table as this event was a district counting
event and carried a 1st place tag of 30 district points
towards the national overall points table.
Dalton
scorched his way around a hilly course on a very hot
day covering two circuits around Wheatley, Gringley
on the Hill, Clayworth and Clarborough. With each lap
consisting of 16 miles per lap, Ian covered the 2 laps
and 32 miles in a time of 1.12.33 over 2 and a half
minutes ahead of second placed rider Alan Cooke (VC
Chesterfield) with a time of 1.15.09. The last three
riders of the day started at 2 minute intervals. With
Ian starting slowly in the heat of the day and taking
some miles to get into a rhythm, Ian caught his 2 minute
(Alan Cooke) man just after the start of the second
lap at Wheatley. After settling into his rhythm and
taking in the climbs at Gringley on the Hill and Clarborough,
there was a visible difference in speed between Ian
and the rest of the field as Ian ploughed on right to
the finish to completely demolish the rest of the field
leaving him the clear winner. As the winner of the Doncaster
Wheelers event Ian collect precious points which count
toward the overall Rudy Project National Time Trial
Series.
‘I
found it difficult to get into a rhythm’, claimed
the Cherry Valley rider after the race, ‘you only
get a couple of miles to get your legs going before
you reach the long climb upto Gringley on the Hill which
was made harder by the strong headwind, but I seemed
to go better on the second lap despite the rising heat’.

Ian Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) 1.12.33
2 Alan Cooke (VC Chesterfield) 1.15.09
3 Chris Stocks (21st Century Airports) 1.18.16
4 Jason Taylor (VC Lincoln) 1.18.26
Once
again, many thanks to Sue Dalton for the superb images.

Cherry
Valley riders Andy Moore Andy Lintin and Gareth Williams
filled three of the first four places in Sundays LRRA
25 champs held near Boston on 20th June 2004. Andy Moore,
winner of last years event, retained his title with
a superb ride finishing in a time of 57.08 on a dreadful
morning. With the wind blowing from a westerly direction,
the Cherry Valley riders faced a tough outward leg to
the first turn before coping with a cross wind in both
directions from Osbourneby to Sleaford and back.
First
of the pre-race favourites to finish was early starter
and up and coming youngster Aaron Tuplin (Alford Wheelers)
who completed the course in a great time of 59.24. A
minute up on Aaron at the Sleaford turn, Gareth Williams
lost some time over the final few miles to record a
time of 58.42 giving him a final placing of 4th in the
LRRA event. With Andy Lintin leading team mate Gareth
at 18 miles by 16 seconds, Andy powered back from Osbourneby
to the finish a speeds touching 34mph to record a brilliant
time, particularly on such a poor day, of 58.10 to give
him second place in the LRRA placings. With just a few
riders still out on the course who could effect the
results, Andy Moore scorched to the finish line with
a time of 57.08 to guarantee him 1st place in the LRRA
competition. Andy Moores time was even more impressive
given his excursion off course at the Sleaford turn,
where a lack of marshalls at the second exit meant Andy
followed an arrow pointing north toward Holdingham before
sharp minded Jack Mitchell called Andy back onto course.
This little excursion cost Andy a small amount of time
which was enough to loose him the 1st place in the overall
open event by a few seconds. Almost last rider to start,
and the only rider left on the road who could split
up the Cherry Valley riders, was Chris O’Rourke
(Alford Wheelers). Chris eventually finished in a time
of 58.24 giving him a well deserved 3rd place in the
LRRA competition and pushing Cherry Valley rider Gareth
Williams into 4th spot and out of the LRRA placings
by only18 seconds.
Despite
the poor conditions and low temperatures, which were
only 8C at 9am, the Cherry Valley riders were pleased
with their performances. Having led his team mates to
the LRRA team award, Andy Moore was disappointed not
to win the overall event by such a small margin despite
going off course, Andy was however, pleased to regain
his LRRA 25 title.
Andy
Lintin was also pleased with his performance hoping
to keep this level of performance for the rest of the
season. Gareth Williams was also pleased with his ride
today, starting to feel a little stronger in only his
fourth weekend of racing this season. |
National
50 Championships (20/06/2004) S12/50 - Sensational ride by
Dalton
|
Ian
Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) finished within touching distance
of a medal in Sundays national 50 championships held
in Devon on Sunday morning 20th June 2004. Finishing
in his highest ever position of 9th, Ian stormed around
the straight out and back course in a time of 1.52.20
averaging 26.7 mph only 6 minutes behind champion Michael
Hutchinson. Ian, who has been undertaking a specific
training regime in preparation for the 50 championships,
was delighted with his ride telling the web site 'my
time to and from the turn was almost identical and I
felt really good today in both directions. The course
was really twisting and lumpy with some long drags in,
but I felt to go really strongly up the long drags and
kept the speed above 25mph when I had expected it to
drop'.
The Devon
based course on the A377 road from Bishop’s Tawton
near Barnstaple to Copplestone, with the turn around
Coppertone’s one way system. Starting near the
back of the field in ceded order, Ian soon settled into
a good rhythm, but due to the nature of the twisting
course he very rarely got a glimpse of any other riders.
Upon
entering the Copplestone at the turn Ians minute man
Gavin Pardoe (Stourbride CC) was just exiting the village.
As some of the other riders suffered on the return leg
from the turn to the finish Ian powered on and eventually
caught Pardoe putting in a big effort to get past and
leave him behind. ‘As soon as I went past Gavin,
I could not keep the speed up and shortly afterwards
Gavin came back past me again’, Ian said. After
taking a small breather, Ian pressed on again too pass
Pardoe and this time leave him in his wake. Pardoe commented
afterwards, ‘when Ian came past me a second time,
he took a drink and then I never saw him again –
what did he have in his bottle’!

Lindsey
Roads 10 (23/06/2004) C10/6 - Ians great form continues
Only 2 days after his magnificent
ride in the National 50 Championships, Ian Dalton (Cherry
Valley RT) continued his great form with a win in the Lindsey
Roads 10 mile event on 22nd June 2004. Ian covered the course
in an impressive time of 21.07 in windy conditions that did
not favor the course which starts near Great Limber village
on the A18 following the road to the Laceby roundabout and
finishing half a mile short of the start.
Getting the
better, yet gain, of local rival Julain Ramsbottom (Newark
Castle - Sherwood Cycles), Ian beat Julian by the usual three
second margin when Julian came back with a time of 21.10.
Nearly a full minute further back was veteran Tony Stott (Science
in Sport.com) with a time of 22.06.
'I was surprised
to win tonight', Ian commented 'it was quite quick on the
way back from the turn using 53x12 most of the way back to
the finish'. 'I was 5 seconds down on Julian at the turn and
thought he would pull more time out of me in the tailwind
back to the finish but I was surprised when he told me I beat
him again by 3 seconds'. Just behind fourth placed rider Adam
Hardy (Wolds RT) was the talented Aaron Tuplin (Alford Wheelers)
who recorded a great time of 22.15 to finish 5th and with
his brother Sam Tuplin (Alford Wheelers) close behind with
an equally impressive 22.31 finishing 7th.

London
St Christophers 10 (24/06/2004) F20/10 - Battling ride by
Gareth to finish 11th
Struggling with high winds
and rain, Gareth Williams (Cherry Valley RT) recorded a
time of 22.53 to finish a creditable 11th place in the London
St Christophers 10 held on Wednesday evening 23rd June 2004.
A field of 100 riders were lined up for this event held
on the A10 near Hertford but many riders chose not to race
because of the deteriorating conditions.
‘I started
quite early’ Gareth commented, ‘it had stopped
raining then and visibility was not too bad, if had continued
to rain the visibility would have been too poor to ride. There
was a vicious cross wind blowing across the course and when
I started I was out of the saddle but had to sit down straight
away because the wind was catching the disc wheel and it was
to unstable to keep upright, I couldn’t even get into
the tri bars for about a mile when you got some shelter from
the wind’.
Battling against
a cross head wind to the turn, the riders faced a return leg
fraught with high speed tailwind then sudden exposed sections
of cross wind with the only compensation of a smooth road
surface over the entire course.
Event winner
with an impressive time on the night was Stuart Shawcross
(Blue Sky Cycles) with a 20.50. Shawcross’s time was
representative of most riders times on the night which was
around 2 minutes slower than previous personal bests.

VC
Chesterfield 25(28/06/2004) O25/10 - Third place for Ian in
rain filled race
|
Ian
Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) powered his way to a magnificent
third place in the VC Chesterfield 25 on Saturday evening
26th June 2004. Event winner and last weekends national
50 silver medallist Mathew Bottrill (Jum Walker RT)
recorded a stunning time of 50.10 closely followed by
5th placed rider in the National 25, Charles Mcullock
(Blue Sky Cycles) with a time of 50.40.
Powering
his way through dreadful conditions on the Ranby based
A1 course from Markham Moor to Blyth, Ian crossed the
finish line with a time of 51.48 which considering the
terrible conditions was a great ride for the night.
Cherry Valley team mate Gareth Williams also braved
the wind and rain to finish in a creditable 16th place
with a time of 55.45.
With
the wind blowing strongly from the South East and the
rain coming down heavily, the outward leg to Markham
Moor was going to be heavy work for the Cherry Valley
pair as the rain continued to poor down from the start
of the event to the finish. The wind was so strong at
one point, Ians speed dropped as low as 19mph over one
of the small rises. The reverse effect was noticeable
from Markham Moor back to the five lane ends roundabout
as the speeds did not drop below 25mph on the climb
back through Elkersley. Once back to five lane ends
roundabout speeds rarely dropped below 30mph and Gareth
hit a max speed of 37 mph near Ranby. Once reaching
the last turn at Blyth, Ian and Gareth battled against
the strong wind to finish up the hard drag up to the
finish.
'I took
it really easy around the roundabouts' reflected Ian
afterwards 'it was really greasy and there was plenty
of oil on the road, but visibility was not that bad.
After last weeks ride both Darren Willetts and Barry
Charley thought they would get the better of me today,
but I felt quite good and beat them both again'. Also
pleased with his ride was other Cherry Valley rider
Gareth Williams, Gareth commented, 'I am pleased with
how I am starting to go, Im starting to feel stronger
and stronger with each race and I was only 47 seconds
slower than last years event which was a much better
day. I sometimes prefer to ride in these sort of conditions
as it puts most other riders off, but it keeps me alot
cooler and I seem to perform alot better. Two weeks
ago it was a really sunny and warm evening with the
wind coming from the North, but I went faster today
and most other riders went about 30 seconds slower.
Ians
next race is back on the A1 covering the same course,
but this time twice, in next weekends 50 mile TT.
Many
thanks to Sue Dalton and Nita Williams for braving the
elements and taking the pictures.

July
2004 - Will the Summer finally Start?
NMCF
50 (03/07/2004) O50/6 - Personal Best and 4th place for Ian
|
On
the most dismal and appalling night with high cross
winds and rain, Ian Dalton recorded a stunning Personal
Best of 1.49.39 to place him provisionally 4th in the
NMCF 50 event held on the A1 on Saturday evening 3rd
July 2004. The course covered 2 laps of circuit from
Ranby down the A1 to Five Lane ends to Markham Moore.
At Markham Moore, the course headed North back to Five
Lane ends and North again to Blyth before returning
past Ranby to start the second lap.
With
a strong field for this prime event, Ian was on a real
flyer covering the first 10 miles being covered in 20.50,
25 miles in a long 53 minutes and at 35 miles Ian was
still 30 seconds up on Joel Wainman (Pete Read Racing).
It was at 35 miles that Ian started to suffer against
the long distance specialists such as Wainman. Over
the last 15 miles Ian lost over 2 minutes to Wainman
pushing Ian into 4th spot. Ian reflected afterwards
‘I was using a sprocket lower towards the end
of the race and that reflected in the drop of speed.
I got to Markham Moore for the second time in around
1hour 30 mins and I thought I would struggle to get
back to the finish in under 20 minutes as the road is
mostly uphill from there to the finish’. Ian reach
Five Lane ends roundabout with around 6 minutes to spare
to cover the last few miles to the finish and a personal
best was still on the cards despite the uphill finish.
Controversy
surrounds second placed rider Tony Ball (Pete Read Racing)
who is being investigated for pacing after allegedly
being caught by one of the tandem pairings and following
them for the latter half of the race.

Sherwood
CC 10 (03/07/2004) A10/14a - Cherry Valley riders battle with
winds
With team leader
Andy Moore missing due to illness, Andy Lintin and Gareth
Williams were the only two Cherry Valley riders racing in
the Sherwood CC event on Saturday on the A1 at Long Bennington.
The two Cherry Valley riders were closely matched on a very
windy evening that threatened rain throughout the event but
never materialised. The wind helped the riders out to the
turn at Gonerby Moore and the riders then faced a slog back
up the A1 uphill and into the wind before finishing at Long
Bennington.
Both Gareth
and Andy suffered for using their disc wheels in the high
cross winds blowing across the course which might have affected
the way they both felt during the race. The event was won
by Andy Proffitt (Artic - Shorter Rochford RT) in 20.15 with
Scott Rose (Rugby Velo) only one second behind in second place
with 20.16. Placing 15th on the night with a time of 21.54,
Gareth Williams (Cherry Valley RT) was disappointed with the
way he rode despite feeling strong and can only put this down
to the incorrect decision to use the disc wheel in the strong
cross winds. Very close behind was team mate Andy Lintin (Cherry
Valley RT) with a time of 22.07 gaining Andy 20th place.
Well
done to former team mate and friend Adrian Brown (Thames Velo)
who recorded a time of 23.56 on a truly grim night and this
only his second TT of the season which started two weeks ago.

10 (06/07/2004) C10/8 - Ian and Andy take first and second
|
Cherry Valley riders Ian Dalton
and Andy Moore recorded a great first and second place
for Cherry Valley RT in the Alford Wheelers 10 on Tuesday
6th July 2004. The Cherry Valley pair clocked times
of 21.21 and 22.27 respectively to take the first 2
placings on a cool but sunny evening on a course started
outside Alford and turning near Sutton on Sea. Ian clocked
up his 12th win of the 2004 season on a good old-fashioned
rough out and back dead turn 10 course.
With
the wind helping the riders back from the turn, Ians
out and back times were almost identical. Andy Moore
made a welcome return to competition after a two-week
break due to illness. Andys impressive return to racing
was almost ruined with a rear wheel puncture just before
his start but managed to return to his car to change
and ride his spare wheel.
The event
was fully backed by the promoting club with over half
of the 60 strong field being Alford Wheelers riders.
The lack of a third counting rider for Cherry Valley
meant the team award was won by Alford Wheelers. Aaron
Tuplin (Alford Wheelers) rode the event twice, firstly
to win the GHS 10 regional championship 23.15, then
secondly to finish an amazing third in the open event
with a time of 23.18 – superb ride Aaron. Fourth
place was filled by another promoting club rider Richard
Robinson (Alford Wheelers) with a time of 23.33.

Seacroft
10 (10/07/2004) V514 - 10th spot for Gareth
|
A time
of 21.55 in the Seacroft 10 was good enough for a 10th
place for Gareth Williams (Cherry Valley RT). The course
was based on the A19 halfway between York and Selby
and turned at the start of the Selby by-pass before
retracing the outward course finishing just short of
the start. The entire course was flat and single carriageway
road with a tailwind to the turn and generally food
road surface. Event winner was Kevin Dawson (Planet
X CRC) who covered the course in an incredible 19.29
and finished over a minute ahead of second placed rider
Nick Griffiths (Featherstone RC). With a tie for third
place, only 24 seconds covered the next 6 riders with
Gareth propping up the bottom of the six. Disappointed
with his ride Gareth commented ‘I went real hard
to the turn averaging over 29mph and was 10 seconds
up at the turn on my 5 minute man but just lost concentration
for a few miles on the way back to the finish which
cost me time’. For once this season the weather
remained fine and all riders escaped the rain showers
but the bad luck continued as the time keepers were
5 seconds to long on Gareths time.

Scunthorpe
RC 50 (11/07/2004) C50/1 - Win
13 for Ian as other Cherry Valley riders suffer poor luck
|
Ian Dalton
(Cherry Valley RT) scored an impressive win at the weekend
in the Scunthorpe RC 50 whilst team mates Andy Moore
and Andy Lintin did not finish despite putting in some
good work early on in the race.
The course started just
outside Gainsborough, heading down to Lincoln before
heading back to Saxilby, turning left up Doddington
Road and then up to toward Collingham and back to Doddington
road and then returning to Gainsborough. A strong wind
blew from a North Westerly direction ensuring a really
tough head wind for the final 10 miles.
Ian covered the sporting
course in a time of 1.52.11 nearly 4 minutes ahead of
second placed rider Alan Cooke (VC Chesterfield) with
a time of 1.56.10 and who was nearly two and a half
minutes ahead of third placed rider Phil Crashley (Gainsborough
Aegir) who finished with a time of 1.58.32.
Andy Lintin suffered
a puncture on Doddington Lane just a mile short of the
turn and decided to call it a day there and ride home.
The race was almost over at 30 miles with Ian nearly
3 minutes ahead of team mate Andy Moore (Cherry Valley
RT) who was in turn closing in hard on his minute man
Alan Cooke. By the time the riders were reaching the
final 10 miles it was clear the Ian just had to take
it easy back to the finish for another victory. The
real race was for second and third spot which was sealed
when Andy Moore could no longer keep up the intense
pace and finally called it a day at 47 miles leaving
Alan Cooke a clear 2 minute gap to secure second place.
With second place secure, a real battle emerged for
third spot which narrowly went to Phil Crashley (Gainsborough
Aegir) beating Simon Beldon (Pete Read Racing) by 2
seconds who recorded a time of 1.58.32 and also finished
ahead of N. Cave (Leicester Forest CC) 1.58.51 and then
Andy Briggs (Doncaster Whls) 1.58.59.
Reflecting on his ride
Ian told us ‘It’s the best I’ve felt
in the three 50’s I’ve ridden over the last
3 weeks. I felt really strong towards the end of the
race but still rode well within myself as I’m
riding on Tuesday night’. |

Wheelers 10 (17/07/2004) O10/2 - 2nd
and 7th for Cherry Valley pair
A last minute
delay and change of course less than 1 hour before the race
was due to start was not enough to put Andy Moore and Ian
Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) off their stride in this open 10
held on Saturday 17th July 2004. An accident on the Northbound
A1 just 2 miles from the start caused havoc with the event
and a late switch by the organiser averted an almost certain
cancellation. The course was switched from the usual O2 from
Ranby to Blyth and back to a course further south of Five
Lane Ends roundabout to Markham Moor and back. The new course
was slower with hugely changeable weather conditions effecting
the race.
Ian notched
up another great performance on a far from ideal course and
evening with Andy Moore only 40 seconds behind. Andy started
earlier in the evening and flew to the turn reaching speeds
of nearly 40 mph before battling back to the finish which
is nearly all uphill from the turn. Andy crossed the line
with a fine performance and a time of 20.58 which was good
enough for another top 10 finish in this high quality field.
Talking to his team mates after the race and before they were
due to start, Andy commented ‘it is really quick to
the turn as the wind is blowing from the North West’.
Ian and Gareth were near the back of the 150 strong field
and by the time the Cherry Valley pair started, it had turned
into a lovely summers evening with the threatening rain and
high winds giving way to sunshine and a light breeze. Both
Ian and Gareth noted much slower speeds than Andy going out
to the turn but a much easier ride to the finish than Andy
had endured. Ian finished with a time of 20.19 which was good
enough for second place with event winner Keith Murray (Science
in sport.com) finishing first with a storming ride of 19.58.
Gareth finished a very disappointed 29th with a time of 21.47
which was his fastest 10 of the year but complained about
his poor performance.

Wheelers Charity 10 (18/07/2004) C10/14 - Win
14 for Ian
|
A humid
and calm morning greeted the riders of the Alford Wheelers
Charity 10 which saw team mates Ian Dalton and Gareth
Williams finish 1st and 3rd respectively. A sporting
course sore the riders tackle the roads from Withern
to South Reston before heading west through Authorpe
and then climbing up Authorpe Crossroads. At the crossroads
the riders turned left and continued to climb to Belleau
to descend to South Thoresby and turning left to Aby
and onto the finish at Withern. This technical course
was based B raods which was very technical with sharp
bends on single track road through Authorpe and Aby.
Scoring
his 14th victory of the year, Ian Dalton (Cherry Valley
RT) romped to victory in a time of 23.13 which was 11
seconds ahead of second placed rider Mark Blagden (Sheffield
Phoenix) 23.24 and a further 22 seconds ahead of Gareth
Williams (Cherry Valley RT) in 3rd. Ians time was even
more impressive as he opted to ride a standard road
bike, which in itself was over 17 year sold, with no
tri bars or aero helmet, unlike the rest of the field
who used standard time trial bikes. Both Cherry Valley
riders were suffering the effects of the previous nights
efforts and both had sore and tired legs which slowed
them down with Mark Blagden failing to start on the
Saturday evening.
‘It
was a really technical but good sporting course’
the Cherry Valley pair confirmed. With over half the
field consiting of Alford Wheelers riders the event
was well supported with the profits going to Charity.
First of the seeded riders to finish was Chris O’Rourke
(Alford Wheelers) who held the lead for 20 minites with
a time of 24.06 with Aaron Tuplin (Alford Wheelers)
recording a time of 24.43 and his elder brother Sam
(Alford Wheelers) pipping his brother with a time of
24.38. Both the Tuplin brothers were still recovering
from a virus which had clearly effected their times
by almost a minute. Taking the lead from Chris O’Rourke
was Gareth Williams (Cherry Valley RT) who corssed the
finish line in a time of 23.46 to push Chris back into
second spot. Gareths lead was to only last 5 minutes
as Mark Bladgen (Sheffield Phoenix) pushed Gareth back
into second place with a time of 23.24 and in turn Blagden
was pushed back into second spot as Ian Dalton (Cherry
Valley RT) crossed the line with a winning time of 23.13.
‘I
felt really tired after last nights race’ Gareth
commented afterwards, ‘I just really struggled
for the first 5 miles or so but when I got to the climbs
I started to get going a bit better and really got into
the rhythm from Aby to the finish’. Ian also struggled
to get going in this early morning event but was still
strong enough to take the victory. Both Cherry Valley
riders decided to ride to and from the event gaining
some additional training miles to make the most of a
successful day. The lack of a third Cherry Valley rider
ensured the team prize was won by Alford Wheelers, consisting
of Chris O’Rourke, Sam and Aaron Tuplin.

50 (25/07/2004) C50/2 -
Mixed
fortunes for Cherry Valley riders
|
A rain
soaked LRRA 50 gave mixed fortunes for Cherry Valley
riders on Sunday 26th July 2004. The course based on
the A15 and A52, starting near Sleaford then heading
South on the A15 to Osbourneby roundabout and then turning
right to Grantham on the A52. At Grantham Spittlegate
roundabout (17 miles) the riders turned and followed
the A52 back to Osbourneby roundabout (25 miles) and
then onto Donnington roundabout on the A52 where they
turned again to retrace back to Osbourneby roundabout
(42 miles). The final leg of the 50 was from Osbourneby
roundabout on the A15 to Sleaford turning at Quarrington
roundabout and then finishing just north of the start.
Mixed
fortunes rained down on the Cherry Valley riders with
Ian Dalton taking the LRRA 50 championship title by
a few seconds from team mate Andy Moore who finished
in second. With Andy looking strong all morning and
leading at many of the time checks, a temporary loss
of form for Dalton meant a tight race all the way to
the line for the Cherry Valley paid with Ian gaining
the final advantage over the closing miles. Ians winning
time of 1.58.10 in rain soaked conditions was only 35
seconds ahead of team mate Andy Moore who recorded a
time of 1.58.45 and was first to cross the finish line
starting at number 25. With the wind deceptively strong
and blowing from a westerly direction, Ian commented
after the race that he struggled to get going especially
up to Grantham where speeds were dropping below 20mph.
‘I just could not seem to get the legs turning,
but that may have had something to do with the rain
which was coming down pretty heavy from the start and
I could just not get warmed up and going hard’.
On the contrary, team mate Andy Moore got into his rhythm
very early on and started to pull away from Ian by the
25 mile mark. ‘I felt I was going much better
today and felt a lot stronger and I didn’t fade
too much toward the end either’.
The other
Cherry Valley riders Gareth Williams and Andy Lintin
both suffered in different ways on the day. Gareth Williams
got to the Grantham turn and was only 1 mile on his
way back from that turn and when he punctured his front
wheel. ‘I got to the turn which was a real hard
slog as it was mostly up hill and into the wind, I got
going back from the turn and the speed didn’t
drop below 30mph when I punctured the front. I rode
for the next 7 miles on a flat until I reached Ians
car at Osbourneby roundabout where Keith changed the
wheel. Once I got the new wheel just put my head down
and went for it. Ian caught me at about 20 miles and
offered me his front wheel, but I told him he wasn’t
getting out of it that easy and I knew there would be
some spares just a few miles up the road’. With
a new wheel in place, Gareth covered the last 25 mile
section in a long 58 minutes which clawed him back into
7th place overall. ‘I was disappointed to loose
so much time with the puncture, I think I might have
lost around 4 minutes because it was so quick on the
section where I punctured’. Meanwhile Andy Lintin
was also not having the best of days and a recent lack
of form was continuing with a disappointing ride to
finish in 8th place with a time of 2.4.59. Like team
mate Ian, Andy also commented that he could not get
going and just found it equally hard in all directions
today.

Round
4 Rudy Project National TT (14/08/2004) K22/14 - 6th place
for Ian

Starting near the back
of the field and being caught by defending champion
Michael Hutchinson, Ian Dalton (Cherry Valley RT) placed
6th overall in Round 4 of the Rudy Project National
Time Trial Series held near Stourbridge on Saturday
14th August 2004. An off form Dalton struggled with
the high temperatures and strong winds over the 2 laps
of a sporting circuit. Ian covered the second lap of
the 2 lap race in a slightly quicker time after a slow
start and Ian commented himself that he ‘felt
to get going better on the second lap’.
Despite the 6th place
in this event, Ian is still placed second overall in
the National Time Trial Series.

10 (15/08/2004) C10/6 - First and Second for Cherry Valley

Ian
Dalton successfully defended his LRRA 10 mile championship
title on Sunday 15th August 2004. Ian narrowly beat
team mate Andy Lintin who put in a fine ride on a really
tough course to finish only 14 seconds behind Ian. Ian
and Andy also led Cherry Valley RT to the winning team
with Gareth Williams making the third counting rider
with Andy Lintin finishing 10th overall.
A calm
morning gave way to a rising wind blowing down the finishing
straight and down the hill up to the finish making the
final mile agonizingly slow for all the riders. Not
having ridden his bike for 3 weeks and being ill earlier
in the week, Gareth finished with a time of 23.29 with
Andy Lintin finishing nearly a minute behind in 24.28.
A very disappointed Andy Lintin explained 'he just cant
seem to get going at the moment', 'I dont seem to have
any strength in my legs at all but I new I had to ride
today to support the rest of the team' explained Andy
Lintin afterwards .With the favorites starting later
in the field it was a while before the final standings
took shape. With Andy Moore coming in with a great time
for the day of 22.10, Phil Crashley (Gainsborough Aegir)
was next fastest with 22.52 and Ian coming in with the
winning time of 21.56.
