Back with a Bang!
Ian Dalton marked his comeback to competition with an emphatic victory in the Gainsborough 25 on Sunday 29th August 2004. After returning from a weeks mountain biking in the French Alps, Ian destroyed the field in this windy event. Suffering from stiff legs after putting in 300 off road miles in the last week and after a recent poor run of results by Ians standards, Ian beat his nearest rival Stephen Roe (Pete Read Racing) by a massive 3 minutes to claim Cherry Valley RT's 22nd win of the year.
Early starter was Andy Lintin (Cherry Valley RT) who caught the worst of the changing wind direction. Andy, who finished 14th In a time of 1.01.18, started into a southerly wind and then had to contend with more headwind on the way back from the turn to the finish. Cherry Valley RT missed out on the team prize with Gareth Williams a non starter due to a heavy cycling crash in France. Riding his mountain bike last week in the French Alps, Gareth came off at 50mph and was unconscious for at least 30 minutes before help arrived. Diagnosed with a double fracture of the collar bone, broken ribs, concussion and multiple abrasions, Gareth will not be racing for the rest of this season. Meanwhile, Andy Moore is away on holiday taking a well deserved break from racing with his family. Andys next race will be the LRRA 30 in mid September.
With Ian finishing first in a time of 54.53 and Steven Roe second in 57.38, third place was a scrap between Nick Cave (Leicester Forest CC), Russell Charlesworth (Calder Clarion) and Chris O'Rourke (Alford Wheelers). With Nick Cave eventually getting third spot with 58.18, Charlesworth just piped Chris O'Rourke into fourth with a time of 58.41. Chris O'Rourke finished fifth with a time of 58.54 and Aaron Tuplin (Alford Wheelers) took sixth place with 59.09.
Commenting after his 17th victory of the season, Ian said 'I was not sure how I would go today. I've not been going to well in the last month or so and the mountain biking might have affected me quite a bit as I was using a much bigger gears today than I've been used to over the last week'. With Ian riding the National Time Trial Championships and another National Round of the Rudy Project Series in September, a return to good form looks welcome. Meanwhile, Andy Lintin told us 'I've been working really long hours at work, especially as the weather has been so bad recently and I just feel tired and lacking in leg strength.
