Tough day out for Jon
Cambridge 10 TT - 03/06/2006 - E10/2
Despite the sun making a rare appearance and the temperature
returning some sort of seasonal norm, the afternoon wind remained
strong which did not go in Jon Surtees favour. Starting early
in the full field of 120 riders, Jon had a storming ride out
to the 5 mile turn reaching this point in a staggering 8 mins
38 seconds.
With such a quick ride to the turn it could only mean 1 thing
for the return 5 mile leg to the finish and that was a hard
slog into a strong headwind. As Jon turned into the wind exiting
the turn, he could instantly feel the wind making life hard
work and with no letup on the return leg Jon crossed the line
in a time of 20.40 which he knew was off the mark for him.
As the afternoon progressed the wind began to drop in strength
and although this meant less advantage outbound to the turn
for the later riders, more significantly, it mean the last
leg to the finish was not as hard. This was reflected in some
of the times as Ian Cammish (Sonic Cycles) posted the 2nd
fastest time of 19.54 whilst the winner and the only other
rider to break the 20 minute barrier was Sam Barker (API –
Metrow).
Jon was later relatively pleased with his ride after realising
what tough conditions they really were after placing 10th
overall.
