A peak to far for Ian
Glossop Kinder Velo Mountain TT - 22/04/2007 - Derbyshire
A calm and slightly overcast morning greeted the 48 riders
competing in the Glossop Kinder Velo ‘Circuit of Kinder’
Hilly TT over a tough 26mile course in the Peak District.
Starting in Glossop there was a climb right from the start
up the Chunal, a decent into Hayfield, another climb and decent
to Chinley, around Chapel en le Frith and onto the long up
hill section passing through Sparrowpit on to the top of Winnats
Pass and Mam Tor and then along Rushup Edge before decending
to Chapel en le Frith, a climb out of Chinley and Hayfield
before finishing just over the crest of the Chunal climb.
This is a hard course with tough climbs and fast descents
where speed can easily reach 50mph.
First of the seeded riders Daniel Soltys from Wrekinsport
CC was setting a pace that would prove to be a hard bench
mark to beat his time of 1 hr 11 mins 16 sec was one of the
fastest times ever for the course and showed that with light
winds the riders could have a slightly easier race than normal.
The next riders to get any where near Daniel’s time
were Jimmy Froggat from Wills Wheels CC with a time of 1.16.00,
almost five minutes slower, then Charles Taylor from South
Pennine RC with a 1.12.33 which improved over three minutes
from his 2006 time, this placed Charles in second place with
Cherry Valleys Ian Dalton and Sherwood CC’s Nigel White
still to finish. Both riders had competed in the Rudy Project
Time Trial series race the previous afternoon getting 1st
and 3rd places respectively, the question was, would they
have recovered enough to challenge Daniel Soltys time?
Ian was the last rider to start three minutes behind Nigel,
and early indications after the second climb of the course
out of Hayfield, showed that Ian was slowly gaining time Nigel
White but loosing time to Daniel Soltys and Charles Taylor.
The next time check Ian got was after the loop around Sparrowpit
and Rushup Edge and things hadn’t changed both Ian and
Nigel were loosing time to the earlier two fast riders, it
was now a battle for third place for them. As Nigel White
crossed the line he recorded a time of 1.13.50 the third fastest
so far, as Ian crossed the line he snatched third with a time
of 1.13.16.
Afterwards Ian commented the he didn’t feel to have
recovered fully from the previous day’s race and felt
to be loosing time on the climbs so was pleased to have still
managed to top three result.
