Gareths race diary
'The race got off to a hectic start with a move of 6 riders
going away in the first mile. The chase was on and it was
frantic and fast for the first forty miles miles. I had a
dig early on but my lack of race fitness meant nothing really
happened and whilst I rested in the bunch the pressure was
on at the front and the bunch split in the cross wind. Unfortunately
I was caught in the wrong side of the split and despite working
hard we couldn't get across the gap.
The pressure of the race was beginning to show as the riders
were really starting to thin out. From 70 starters there were
barely 40 left in the race. After having a good hard workout
for the first 5 laps I was starting to get tired and as we
were sprinting for 24th place I cramped so I just eased up
to cruise in to finish 34th'
I was pleased with how it went for the first race of the
year but annoyed at missing the split in the middle of the
race.
