Ian and Jon cruise to victory

LRRA 2up - 01/04/2007 - Lincoln

Lincoln Wheelers had the honour of promoting the first Lincolnshire County Championship event of 2007 with the 25mile 2 up team time trial, where riders race as a team of two taking turns to set the pace.

The event was based at Saxilby, starting on the A57 at the Broadholme junction and continued on the A57 to Newton on Trent where left onto the A1133 to Besthorpe, left again took the riders onto side roads near North Scarle and into Wigsley. Here on the first laps it was a left turn to joint the road to South Clifton and back onto the A1133 to Besthorpe and through to Wigsley for the second time and on to the finish at Harby.

The sunny morning temperatures were kept low by the strong north easterly wind, but with the wind in this direction it kept speed high along the A57 and A1133, it was the road to Wigsley where the riders fought against the mornings wind.

Early pace setters were Lincoln Wheelers pairing of Paul Holder and Rob Brewer who were the first the few teams to beat the hour, clocking 59 mins 50 sec. This time was beaten by the City Road Club Hull team of Mark Philipson and Andrew Tummons with a 59.40 but wouldn’t count towards the Championship as it was for Lincolnshire teams only. The farther and son pairing of Terry and Russell Beedham from Lincoln Wheelers stopped the clock with a time of 1hr 0 mins 20 sec this after a touch of wheels had brought Terry crashing to ground in the final miles and their chance of winning a medal. The next new leaders were the Scunthorpe Poly team of John Brealey and Tony Nash who knocked almost one minute off the current best time with a 58.55. Boston Wheelers top team of David Grayson and Paul Griffiths also had some bad luck after having to stop completely where the course rejoined the A1133 due to road traffic, this hold up almost certainly cost them a bronze medal winning ride. The next team to set the new fastest time was the Yorkshire team of Darren Otter and Simon Keeton from the Rutland CC who managed a great ride of 55.27.

Last team to start was the defending county champions, Cherry Valleys, Jon Surtees and Ian Dalton. With Jon sporting his “war wounds” from a crash two weeks earlier and Ian hoping to perform better than the previous weekend it would be interesting to see how well they performed. Early signs were good as their speed rarely dropped below 30mph on the opening leg to Besthorpe, across the airfield to Wigsley the speed was down to 22 / 23 mph but a time check showed they were the fastest team so far, on the loop back to the A1133, Besthorpe and Wigsley their time advantage had grown and they crossed the finish line in Harby with a time of 54.24. The fastest team on the day by just over 1 minute and county champions again with a winning margin of 3 mins 31 sec over John Brealey and Tony Nash from Scunthorpe Poly CC.
