Rudy Success for Ian

Rudy Project TT Round 3 - 21/04/2007 - Harby, Notts

Saturday 21st April saw Nottingham Clarion promote the third round of the 2007 Rudy Project Time Trial Series on a course based near Harby and Belvoir Castle.

The race distance was 26.5 miles for all categories covering two laps of a circuit that started 2.5 miles east of the village of Harby on Long Lane, a left turn in Harby and it was on to the long climb of Harby Hill, which had it’s steepest section near the top. Left again and through the village of Eastwell heading towards Belvoir along the ride top, this section of the course was fast with the riders getting some help from the wind, but it was not all good news at road surface was rough making it difficult get a good rhythm going. Left at Belvior and down the hill back to Long Lane for two miles to complete a lap.

Cherry Valley rider Ian Dalton was competing in the veterans (40+) category which had it’s best quality field to date, been one of the seeded riders Ian was starting towards the back of the field of riders and it was local rider Darren Hodgkinson from Sherwood CC who set the early target with a time of 1hr 7mins 37sec, Darren held the lead until Simon Keeton of Rutland CC some ten minutes later bettered the time with a 1.06.04. The next rider to top the leader board was Scotland’s Equipe Velo Ecosse Garry Brown with a 1.04.53. With the seeded riders now finishing the top placing were changing quickly, Stephen Marchant of Swindon Road Club now had the fastest time of the day with a 1.03.18, next rider to finish was Boston Wheelers Jim Boyle who’s 1.04.33 put him into second place, for now. The next three riders that finished were to take the top three places overall, they were local fast man Nigel White of Sherwood CC, and joint series leaders Cherry Valleys Ian Dalton and Dave Dent from Wightlink / Offshore Race Team.

Time checks at the top of Harby Hill for the first time after less than 5 miles of racing had Cherry Valleys Ian Dalton 5 seconds faster than Nigel White but 15 seconds slower than Dave Dent. After the climb for the second time the time gaps were Ian 40 seconds faster than Nigel but still behind Dave by only 6 seconds. It was going to be the last 8 miles of racing the would separate Ian and Dave, the second time along the ride top Ian felt to be going faster than his first lap but would it be fast enough? At the finish Nigel White clocked 1.03.04 to take the lead, until Ian Dalton finished with a 1.02.10, Dave Dent had slowed on his second lap suffering with cramp but still managed to clock 1.02.42 good enough for second place.

With Ian taking his second win in the series he is now leading by a single point from Dave Dent.
